My 3900X CPU spikes to 104C when gaming, 80 when browsing. (SOLVED)

I attached a picture that might have enough info as I'm at work.

New build using the wraith cooler that came with CPU and using Arctic paste spread evenly.

3200 DDR memory.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

1.45V is normal for the R9, but it being stock does not mean it is good. Try to undervolt AND PLEASE buy a new cooler! How much can you spend? 50 bucks get you something decent and 80 a suoper silent soultion. That chip is simply a bit much for the stock cooler...

Oh and do you have your BIOS up to date? They are fixing many things. Voltage regulation is one of them.

Idk 1.45 seems really high for idle maybe intel is just to diffrent from amd ^^ and ye get a decent cooler u cant really run high end chips with stock coolers :D

Yeh... I have seen anything from 1,34-1,45 depending on board and AGESA version... but what I mean is that it will survive this no problem, when cooled properly

Reseat the cooler - 80 while browsing is absurd even for the stock cooler - also undervolt.

EDIT: Also make sure you haven't bathed the whole thing in paste - Arctic Silver is mediocre paste - get a good one if you're going to be replacing the stock paste. Something like Kryonaut. Arctic Silver applied in a bad way is worse than stock paste.

The stock cooler on the 3900X is not like Intel's little dinky aluminium block - it has a copper core and heatpipes - performance wise, it beats the 212 from Cooler Master quite handily.

@Myk3_Furywhat are you using to track thermals as well? Use HWiNFO or Ryzen Master. And please reseat the cooler with actual good paste.

I updated bios and still have issues. Would undervolting not take advantage of a stock 3900 without overclocking?

What? The BIOS is not the issue - your cooler is not mounted well I'd imagine and you've used crap paste (Arctic Silver) - the stock one with the default application gives better results than yours.

You should be getting at most 90*C under max load - your cooler is NOT mounted well

Correct me if I'm wrong but other than a poor choice/application of thermal paste isn't there just one way to mount the cooler?

To much pressure can also be bad because of board flex

Ok, I never liked how the cooler fit. There seemed to be a lot of play after it was mounted. I'll post back later tonight after I re-seat everything.

Thnx

Regarding the high voltages, amd has launched this week a new chipset update that handles better the voltages, aplied it to my 3700x used to spike 1,49 in idle too, now its on 0,9 with spikes up to 1,3 https://www.amd.com/en/support

Main rig: CPU: Ryzen 7 3700X cooled by a Noctua NH-U14S; Mem: 16 GB(2x8) G.Skill TridentZ White 3200 MHz; GPU: EVGA RTX 2070 XC; MOBO: MSI B450 Tomahawk; Storage: XPG Spectrix S40G M.2 512GB SSD; Kingston A400 480GB SSD; 1TB Western Digital Blue HDD; PSU: Corsair CX750M Semi-modular (80+ bronze); CASE: Thermaltake Commander C36.

Secondary rig: CPU: Intel Core i7 4790 @3.60GHz(Turbo @4.00GHz) cooled by Corsair H60; Mem: G.Skill RipJawsX DDR3 16GB(4x4) OC@2133MHz (11-11-11-30 (1.6V)); GPU: None(for now); MOBO: Gigabyte Z87-HD3; Storage:HyperX 120GB; PSU: Thermaltake SmarT series 750w (80+ bronze); CASE: Thermaltake Chaser A41.

So... I'm sure it helps if the latch is in the clamped position. Lol peaks at 71°C in Battlefield V.  Prime 95 is giving me these numbers...

Is this to be expected?

Don't cheap out on your thermal paste and cooler when you're going for the highest rank cpu, it doesn't make sense. Get an AIO liquid cooler and Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut. The ideal max temp is 87C, 93C is still too high.

You are absolutely right! But don’t get an AIO! They DONT perform better than a decent air cooler. Simply get a NH D15! Best aircooler on the market right now. It will outperform almost every AIO, be more silent and more reliable (less moving parts).

I am using an open loop myself, and I get why people want a AIO... but they are pretty dumb and a waste of money!

other alternative: BeQuiet dark rock 4 pro
