Found in The Trash

I found an old CRT monitor in the trash on the side of the road, it's a Gateway VX900, when I turned it on I saw that the picture was a little fuzzy and dim at full brightness. I cracked it open and adjusted the focus and brightness to good enough but, I cannot get the contrast and black levels better. Anyone have any input on how to mend this? Should I just leave it because the picture is OK in videos and games?

 

Also what are some cool things anybody has found because it was being thrown away?

Specifications:

Honestly, I wouldn't even bother with a CRT these days. Back when we first moved to LCD base screens there was a good size input/refresh delay. Ghosting was also a much bigger issue then. Now though we can gotten to the point that those downsides are all but gone. You can get 1ms TN panels and IPS panels that come down to 3-4ms. Heck VA panels are doing 3-5ms now too. 

 

I mean if you want to tinker with it as a project go ahead, but for daily use a cheap 22" inch 1080p LCD is hard to beat when compared to a old CRT.

Personally, I'd keep it. I'm a weirdo who appreciates older monitors with a newer PC, but if you can't find a use for it, give it or sell it to someone who might use it.

@pizapower I am not 100% sure yet but, I am running it right now at 1600X1200 @75hz, if this monitor is the same as the Hitacti SuperScan 751 than it should be the same specs.

@AngryBeaver I have a good LCD that  I use for most of my tasks, it may be old but it still looks better than the cheap junk that I saw at BESTBUY.

 

Also I like tinkering with stuff, trying to make them better or last longer.

@pizapower After some toying around, here is what the max refresh rates are at these resolutions.

1600X1200@76Hz

1440x1080@84Hz

1400x1050@87hz

1280x960@94Hz

1200x900@100Hz

1120x840@106Hz

1152x720@124Hz 16:10 ratio
