I prefer dogs because they usually are more loyal, affectionate, and easier to train. This is not to say I hate cats (other than the feral cats and household pet cats running loose in my neighborhood). I have friends that owned exceptional cats in the past that I became fond of.

 

Even though I prefer dogs, I will admit that cats require less maintenance.

I have no data on which to base this but I would guess that this community will be more cat people because computer enthusiasts are typically not the most outdoorsy people and walking a dog is something that happens outdoors.

Cats require less maintenance but only want things to go their way. You know, like a lot of people in real life.

Dogs need more maintenance but they're generally loyal, loving and much more fun. I'll choose dogs, especially since my favorite pet is a beagle and basset hound mix I have.

I used to live with cats and dogs, but not at the same time.

 

I'm more of a dog person, I loved going out with the dog, long walks, treks, etc.

 I often read/hear that dogs need more "maintenance" than cats... In a way I don't really agree.

A dog, you give him some attention, you go for walks, you play with him. It's good for you and it's happy.

 

A cat? You need to take care of it, he always wants your attention at the least convenient time for you, when he wants your attention it will find ways to make you understand, quickly, and when you give him attention, it will totally ignore you, etc.

 

Both are equally in need of attention and maintenance, in different ways.

 

My last dog friend was a Weimaraner, named Laika, who tragically died because of a stoopid hu-man. It was a long time ago.

Now we are considering with my daughter to get a new furry friend, a border collie almost certainly.

I like both cats and dogs - though cats are by far my favourite animal. They don't pester you constantly, they don't require walks, yet they are still cute and cuddly.

 

Just like dogs, cats can and do have different personality, though.

 

I likely will have a dog eventually, mind you, but I currently have 2 cats, and will always have cats.

Yeah I also find the “cats don’t pester you constantly” to be a load of bullshit. My mom has two cats that will not leave anyone alone unless you actively chase them off.

Cats see you as a larger, stupider cat. Thus, they are stupid, and they think you are stupid. Dogs just love you.

How about cats that behave like dogs? I have had two of those.

My current cat Garfunkel is very dog like, he plays fetch, is very loyal and loving and never too far away from me.

My late cat we called Stink (my sister named him) also was rather dog like, he even licked me on the face like a dog, also was very loyal.

I dare say Garfunkel is more dog like though as he loves belly rubs (very unusual for cats) and he loves rolling over.
