i7 3770k to Ryzen 3600 Upgrade

Chri5

I'm looking for some help with motherboards and my build in general. I'm not up to date on what ram works best with ryzen and if there is any real advantages to x470 or x570 over b450 motherboards. I have to buy from Newegg as I got a few gift cards from over the years so here's my parts list so far.

The last system I built for myself was in 2012 (specs in sig).

Budget is $1000 but less is better. I have a GTX 1080 that I'll be throwing into this system. I also have a potentially broken OCZ 850 Gold PSU or 2 EVGA 500w Bronze PSU's I can use with the system... might just get another gold psu.

That ram is good, i can't recommend a x570 board for a 3600 though, and you don't really need a CPU cooler, the stock one is more then satisfactory.

8700K @ 5.2ghz 1.29V, 4x8 Rev.E @ 4040 13-20-20-39 1.7V.

Would this be a better motherboard option + wifi pci card?

I was thinking of getting a mobo that has wifi built in as I'll likely be moving out in the next year or so. Not sure what my internet situation is going to look like.

No, the MSI Pro Carbon line isn't great, they have a lot of problems. I would get this https://www.newegg.com/p/N82E16813145082?Item=N82E16813145082&nm_mc=AFC-RAN-COM&cm_mmc=AFC-RAN-COM&utm_medium=affiliates&utm_source=afc-PCPartPicker&AFFID=2558510&AFFNAME=PCPartPicker&ACRID=1&ASID=https%3a%2f%2fpcpartpicker.com%2flist%2f&ranMID=44583&ranEAID=2558510&ranSiteID=8BacdVP0GFs-cYSxG6V_kEufh39B71LQug The Aorus line is fairly priced with good quality VRMs and components.

For my 3600 I went with a MSI B450 Tomahawk which I highly recommend because almost all 400 series motherboards don't support Ryzen 3000 out of the box without a BIOS update. In order to update the Bios you need a supported CPU, but with the B450 Tomahawk there is a thing called BIOS Flashback built in and it lets you update BIOS without CPU or Memory

Its also a good feature to have in case your mobo gets bricked. It also has decent VRMs for overclocking

You'll also save quite a bit of money, the B450 Tomahawk runs at about $100ish depending on where you buy from

https://www.newegg.com/msi-arsenal-gaming-b450-tomahawk/p/N82E16813144189

On ebay as refurbished its about $80

Forgot to mention I'm a bit of a silent pc freak so I like having my PC dead silent. I figured getting a noctua over a hyper 212 would be a good idea with the free bracket updates in the future.

Don't really recommend that one, as you need an older 1st or 2nd gen ryzen in order to boot and update BIOS since it has no bios flashback

Thoughts on B450 Tomahawk vs GIGABYTE B450 AORUS PRO WIFI?

I've got a friend's 1700x that I can borrow to update any last gen motherboard if I need to but BIOS Flashback would make the build a lot easier to complete.

There isn't much difference, the Gigabyte one has wifi built in but the MSI has bios flashback

But basically they are very similar boards but some people think MSI has better overclocking

If you have a 1700x that you could use, the gigabyte board would work as well

Actually the newer shipment of boards should all have the new update, as well as before buying you can contact the seller to see if the board will have the new update before purchase. Computer Repair shops will also update the bios for you for usually a low price and sometimes even for free.

3600 will give better performance but honestly I heard it was only a couple of percentages and with a 1080 it likely will make 0 difference for 1440p ultrawide.

if you want this PC to last long then M.2 isn't the best drive because SSDs don't have lifespan as long as HDDs. I'd recommend get a smaller M.2 SSD (500 GB) drive and another 2.5" SSD drive or 1 TB HDD.

A larger SSD has more endurance than a smaller capacity SSD.

Depends on the chip type, low capacity SLC chip has the best endurance, the cheap TLC is the worse.

If comparing the same type, yes larger size is relatively better, since it has more room to swap the data.

3200 cl16 is fine. Robert mentions theres a 1% between 3600 cl15 and it. And the cost is just not worth it. Get a good reliable 3200 cl16 and don't worry any further.

A friend of mine got the X470 Gaming Pro Carbon which he received DOA, so he returned it and was sent out another new board, within a couple months it started randomly powering off and throwing out debug error leds for CPU and Ram, we tested all components and determined it was the board, RMAd it and the RMA department confirmed it was the board, so they sent him out a replacement which was in really really bad shape, missing and bent pins, a non working pcie slot, the usb 3 header only had two pins so it didn't work, and non working leds. So he RMAd it again and got another board that was in slightly better shape that he's used until upgrading to X570 and Zen2. I've also talked with others on here who have had problems with the Pro Carbon. The people that get boards that work say it's a great board but too many negative experiences from others and with my buddy have turned me away from using or recommending them personally.

Things being dead on arrival are pretty rare, but it can happen with any component. As for the poor replacement that just sounds like an error on MSI's part that shouldn't have been sent out. Of course it shouldn't happen but things can slip through the net. No brand is perfect and you could dig up bad reviews for any component if you look hard enough.

Ahhh OK. Different board the the x470 though ;)

Either way B450 is a good shout just do some research in reliability and feature set. No need for x470 x570
