FDA Canine Heart Issue Linked to Food

The FDA just released a report linking Heart Disease/Failure to Grain Free Canine Food. Please read this, I was surprised to learn this. 

I have called my dog's vet, you should do the same.

@Crunchy Dragon not a tech related subject there is a dog thread in off topic you can post this on.

I live in misery USA. my timezone is central daylight time which is either UTC -5 or -4 because the government hates everyone.

That said, I've mainly skimmed through it, but basically, Grain-free "healthy" diets for our dogs.. are not exactly good for them so you're better off giving them food with grains in it?

I recently saw this too. My dog eats Merrick grain free, but I guess I will be switching. Also, if I remember correctly in the report with the dogs who died I am fairly sure out of all the cases it was only 4 different brands, none of which I had ever heard of.

This is where talking to your vet is helpful. I am waiting to hear back from mine.

She was actually just at the vet and they said she is completely healthy, they know what food she eats too. Just got blood work and everything done. I may switch regardless, the new food I have been eyeing is cheaper any way. Shes been eating the same stuff for about a year and I hear its good to switch up the food every one in a while.

The study is junk. 

 

1) most of the dogs have been tested for blood taurine levels and were normal.

2) They mention feeding a grain diet when plants don’t produce taurine.

3) No grain diet from the big 5 was tested. 

4) FDA jumps the gun on a study that is inconclusive.

5) They say to not feed raw when raw has minimal vegetables and pulses which should solve this whole issue. 

6) There’s no mention of other possible issues like glyphosate or residual pesticides affecting uptake of selenium, taurine, cysteine, and methionine, nor any mention of CoQ10 supplementation or testing. 

7) They tested California Natural which has been out of production since 2014/2015. 

? < This is supposed to be 8 ) Why is there no mention of high meat inclusion (except for tiny patches that are easily missed)? 

 

All in all, I don’t buy it. This is to instill fear in dog owners whereas the FDA could have put mandatory taurine, selenium, and carbohydrates testing on the GA. Unfortunately the big 5 companies would rather pay for junk ingredients to turn a massive profit at the expense of dogs’ health. Let’s start testing pesticides to see if those can block uptake of amino acids. 

 

This study is inconclusive as there is no minimum lower limit of taurine for dogs, no expectation for clean sourcing, and testing of other causes are more likely to be denied by the parent companies of those causes.

Maybe the government should step in, make it a legal requirement to ensure that pet food is actually giving the animal what it needs. Here pet food is more tightly regulated than what is fit for human consumption.

I don’t have dogs (just cats) so this isn’t of concern to me personally. But this study - while not ironclad, does show we need to heavily research this. 

 

For those concerned, call your vet and ask them what they think of the research. Ask them to explain it, if you want to learn more.
