SOCIAL MEDIA STRIKE by LARRY SANGER

Hi, just read an article about social media strike declared by Wikipedia co-founder Larry Sanger, and he invited all to join this strike. I have signed up the Declaration of Digital Independence,  and so wanted to share this news with you guys.

https://larrysanger.org/2019/06/social-media-strike/

This is article about Social Media Strike.

So is Larry effectively saying that you have to make a post on a social network to join this strike the point of which is to not use social networks for two days? The whole thing contradicts with itself, and I am personally unable to join because I don't use social networks, period.

First I also thought about this contradiction. Then realized it is about spreading message in large numbers, so that it will get noticed. There is a hashtag too. The count of hashtag will cause significant impact in determining seriousness about these things in people. Btw, you can sign up for declaration if you agree with cause :)

More accurately he's asking people to spam social networks with anti social network messages. But I agree it's not a great idea. There are free (as in freedom) social networks but people just don't seem to use them, and it's not like facebook is ever going to go decentralized - that would literally kill their business model. Not that I care if they don't make money, I'm just saying they won't do it.

The average Joe won't know what this is even about and those who do... why are they on facebook to begin with?

Also @SarveshZaps please follow the news posting guidelines. You need to write a summary of what the article says with some quotes and give your opinion at the bottom.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

I also think that as long as people use social networks to make a fuss about something, it benefits the social networks, and nothing is going to change. Something like a "social network equivalent of radio silence" for as long as possible (months, years), along with telling your friends why you are doing it, will send a much more powerful message given that there are actually enough people that are dedicated to the idea, and not just bandwagoning without putting too much thought into it.

If you want people to protest a toilet by not using it you hang up a sign on the toilet door, dont you?

Too bad i can't participate as I don't have any social media lol

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

Spoiler

@SarveshZaps your topic does not meet the posting guidelines for this section. Please update your post or it will be moved.

When creating a thread in the News subforum, please make sure your post meets the following criteria:

  • Your thread must include some original input to tell the reader why it is relevant to them, and what your personal opinion on the topic is. This needs to be MORE than just a quick, single comment to meet the posting guidelines.
  • Your thread must include a link to at least one reputable source. Most of the time, this should be a respected news site.
  • Your thread should also include quotes from the cited source(s). While you shouldn't just copy the entire article, your quote should give the reader a summary of the article in a way that gives the key details, but also leaves room for them to read the full article on the linked website. Please use quote tags to show that you have copied this content from another site.
  • The title of your thread must be relevant to the topic and should give a reader a good idea of the contents of the thread. Copying the title of the source is permitted but absolutely not required. It should be to the point and not be done in such a way as to mislead a reader, such as clickbait, etc.
  • If your article is about a product or some form of media, images are always appreciated, although they are not required.

Failure to comply may result in your thread being locked or removed without warning.

Sure, but it's worth noting you have a sig and a very social commentary statement in it.  Views and ideas come thru everywhere we go.  We do what we are.

Of course Facebook is different than a forum.  Tho I see that idea in the OP worthless as hell.

If you don't like social media, just don't use it. I don't get the big deal some people make over it. Other people can like stuff you don't like.

That is actually wrong. They know much more about you because your friends have facebook and FB searches their contact list. This is just one example.

To some extent that's true, facebook probably knows you exist - however from a contact list they can only get your phone number and at worst your address, which is mostly public information anyway. I'm more concerned about tracking habits and interests.

Pathetic.

The best way to do a "social media strike" is to just tell people to use a DNS that will return the below addresses:

127.0.0.1 facebook.com

127.0.0.1 twitter.com

127.0.0.1 instagram.com

127.0.0.1 linkedin.com

127.0.0.1 tumblr.com

127.0.0.1 pinterest.com

127.0.0.1 myspace.com

127.0.0.1 plus.google.com

127.0.0.1 snapchat.com

127.0.0.1 flickr.com

127.0.0.1 gotinder.com

127.0.0.1 ask.fm

127.0.0.1 vk.com

127.0.0.1 meetup.com

127.0.0.1 tiktok.com

127.0.0.1 hangouts.google.com

127.0.0.1 kik.com

And lobby to have all ISPs incorporate into their DNS servers as well

Nice to see GrindR and Bumble are fine
