Ryzen 3000 build refresh? Any reason not to?

I hate my MSI motherboard. It has network issues, and after all the problems I've had with AMD MSI motherboards, I just want to rid myself of anything MSI in my system.

Thus, I'm looking to replace it this summer.

Current build:

  • 7600k
  • Z270 motherboard
  • 16GB RAM
  • 800GB SSD
  • GTX 980
  • 29" 1080p 21:9 monitor

So, for sake of argument, let's say the rumors on AMD's upcoming 3000 series are correct. Is there any reason for me not to get the base 3300x? If it does indeed have 6c/12t with a decent clock, why would I need anything more?

I currently use my PC to play games, though nothing competitive and honestly, it's not that often. Other uses are just YouTube and spreadsheets.

As I'd be getting a new motherboard and CPU, I'd likely just replace the entire system. New build would look something like this:

  • Ryzen 3
  • X570 motherboard
  • 32GB RAM
  • 256GB NVME, 2TB 660p
  • GTX 1080
  • 35" 1440p 21:9 monitor

I keep getting told that Ryzen's memory issues are a thing of the past, and with this series I think I'm finally willing to risk using them again.

Why not just but a NIC for your computer? Gigabit card are cheap on Amazon

To a greater degree the memory issues are, but you may have to tinker with your SOC voltages a bit to get them working as usually auto supplies to little and causes errors and crashes. I have to run mine at 1.15v to be stable.

As far as getting a 3300x based on the rumors, theoretically it fits your use case perfectly.

MSI has seemingly had a very rough AMD series since the 3xx launch and sounds like its not getting any better.

Why? I don't see much point getting a second hand 1080 when the RTX 2060 is hardly behind it but you can get it brand new with all the warranty and such...

Hmmm. Hopefully they remedy that with the new boards.

Hah, to say the least. I had multiple MSI boards fail on me, with poor warranty support. Simply not interested in them as a company anymore.

Usually I'd agree on the false part, as it seems pretty out there, but at the same time we're close to launch so the rumors could very well be accurate.

The GTX 1080 is mostly due to the way I prefer to do my PC upgrades; the 1080 will likely cost me nothing, and the way I buy it, might actually make me money.

It's mostly the way I use my PC; I'll have 100+ tabs open across multiple browsers, and sometimes when I have a game running I'll see memory usage get quite high. Since the cost of RAM is quite low right now, the extra $80 or so seems like a small investment to make sure I don't run into any issues.

seems that customer support in the US is crappy as hell (for MSI)

Contacted them once once about my GPU and had response within hours and solved the next day. (Europe)

I keep getting told that Ryzen's memory issues are a thing of the past, and with this series I think I'm finally willing to risk using them again.

- I would say yes the follow up to whatever the 2600x will be, will likely be good enough for your use. Like a 3600X or whatever they call it.

- B550 motherboard will probably suffice, as does B450 now. Unless you are going for an extreme OC.

- 16GB of RAM is likely enough for your use case for the forseeable future.

- GTX 1080 is a good card if you can find it for a good price. RTX 2060 is 15% slower and has only 6gb VRAM. Both can be had for about $350 it seems (1080 used on Ebay). Get a used 1080TI for significantly more performance with the money you save from 16GB of RAM and motherboard is what I would do. Can be found for around $550 used.

Good luck!

Well by the time you buy a gpu prices may go down with Navi launches, but  it's unlikely to be the case.

The video card will likely cost me nothing the way I buy it, which is why I'm going with one that's a generation older. Slightly less performance, but the savings are worth it.

I am almost maxing out 16GB of RAM with the way I use my PC now, so I'd rather just pay the minuscule amount it costs to double it up :)

Yeah, I've been a little torn on B550. I really like XFR, and it's automatic overclocking; if that works fine on the B series boards, I'll go that route, otherwise I'll probably stick to the higher end ones, especially if I'll be spending even less on the CPU. I don't think Ryzen 5 would really benefit me over Ryzen 3 as it's rumored tbh.

I'm running a 2700X on a B450 right now, and have all the XFR and PBO features enabled. Works like a charm. CPU boosts to 4.3Ghz on one core or I believe 4.2 Ghz all cores.

It would be kind of silly to spend money on an X570 motherboard with a Ryzen 3. For the price difference between an expensive motherboard and a cheap motherboard (easily $50) you can almost upgrade from a Ryzen 3 to a Ryzen 5 (price difference between the R3 2200G and the R5 2600 is less than $60 at the moment). You are getting WAY more performance out of that money rather than the potential minuscule difference in OC (unlikely any difference).
