What's the deal with PSU certification?

Go to solution Solved by mariushm,

No PSU will blow your PC to pieces.

80+ White simply means it can only achieve 80% efficiency at any load.

80 bronze requires minim 82, 85, 82% at 20% load, 50% load and 100% load.

You can make a very shitty power supply that will fail within half a year due to lousy fan, overheating components, subpar transformer etc and submit it to the 80 plus organization and have it pass the 80 bronze tests.

Doesn't mean it's quality psu, just means the efficiency thresholds were achieved.

This being said, in order to achieve these efficiency levels, usually higher quality components have to be used, so as side effect such power supplies tend to be a bit more reliable.

Hi guys I just want to ask couple of things:

  1. Will an 80+ "White" certification PSU blow my PC to pieces?
  2. Why does the 80+ certification exist?

Still hasn't answered my first question sadly

Blow it up.. no, but its chances are increased compared to Bronze, Gold, Platinum etc because in general they use crappy components and have poor OCP and voltage ripple.

1. Depends. The quality of the PSU could range from very shit to kind of shit.

2. To show the efficiency of the PSU. basically how much of the power it draws from the socket is turned into power for your system. @Skiiwee29's links should help with understanding what rating has what efficiency. More efficient doesn't mean higher quality PSU though, for quality check the PSU Tier List

Check PSU tier list to see which to buy, Tier B and higher is strongly recommended, Tier A is ideal and A+ is too expensive for anything that's not a high end workstation.

Actually, it pretty much has.

These are certifications for efficiency. Efficiency has nothing to do with quality, so just because PSU is labeled as 80+, it doesn't mean it will blow up. Nor does it mean it won't blow up. Impossible to judge just from efficiency (although I do not know any decent 80+ white units)

Not the worse PSU you could have, but definitely not the best. If you can't afford getting a better one, then this should suffice provided your system doesn't draw enough to stress the PSU.

yeah... sleeve bearing, group reg

it's nothing explosive, just don't expect it to last longer than 2, maybe 3 years

I'd get something better when you do have the money

at that time you can check the psu tier list, we'll try to keep it as updated as possible

  1. Yes, there is no good 80plus White PSU. The ones that were are old so they are bad
  2. To increase the power factor and maybe also the Efficiency.

Back in the day the Power Factor of PSU was total shit, at 0,6 or something in that area, aPFC was rare (though there were some).

80plus forced aPFC and a Powerfactor of 0,9 or better.

Not literally "pieces", no. But can all of your parts stop working?  Yes.
