My friend just blew up his 9900k

Yeah my chip is weird. It hits a bit of a wall with temps over 5 ghz. I can run it there at 1.24 (under load reported by HWI64 1.265 in bios) and it doesn't even go above 80c peak with small FFT. I can hit stock all core under 1.1. I'm pretty sure it would do 5.2 all day with a custom loop. I'm not willing to spend $500 + to find out. It's overkill for me anyway. I listed the whole rig sans GPU on CL. 

Ya dude if someone can tell the difference between 5Ghz or 5.2Ghz then it would only be on a benchmark.

Nope! you will have to sand as well and your really risking the CPU.  The IHS is better then previous Intel sh*T so leave it alone.  Just get good cooling on it and your set.

Acceptable voltage?  You have no idea what VID is or how it works with loadline, do you?

1.5v means ZERO AMPS going into the CPU.  Zero.

In other words, if you use ANY sort of Loadline Calibration, all bets are off.

That's why 1.404v idle at 5 ghz with Auto voltages is safe as long as you stick to all bios defaults.  185 amps will drop that 1.4v to 1.24v at full load, with AC loadline (Not loadline calibration) boosting the input voltage to the VRM slightly depending on load, to help mitigate vdroop without using Loadline Calibration.  If you try setting 1.4v manually (still with LLC set to normal or standard, which are still Intel defaults of 1.6 mOhms of VRM Loadline), your vcore will be 1.10v at 185 amps, and that won't be stable at 5 ghz.

i'm actually a bit surprised 1.5v is all it took, not that i'd ever run anything past 1.4 24/7, i've never even gone for 5.2 on mine, 5.3-2avx takes 1.38v and i'm not even sure it's completely stable, and i can't prime on that.

The heat probably killed it. A 9900k at 5.2 with 1.5 v core (with enough LLC to maintain that overclock) would likely have had all cores at TJmax with any significant load. The d15 is good but not that good. I've never done anything that stupid but I'm pretty sure it would only clock itself down enough to stay right under 100c.

Yean apparently it ran fine then suddenly died.  Sorta mysterios, but also he never told me his temps, he never uses temp apps.  He just set it and forget it and this is what happens.  I don't think Intel will RMA it and say he botched the CPU.

Even back in 2007 with the Q6600 (binned far lower than the QX6850), people were fine with 1.5V 24/7, as long as they had adequate cooling. That's the 65nm node for you. Don't forget that as the nodes get smaller, voltages get lower. Some people even had the Q6600 at 1.6V for over a year without problems.
