PC in a PS2 PlayStation 2 Fat I5 + GTX1050 ti

Hello guys, am Claude a newbie in this forum and I would like to share some pictures and fun from the htpc with ps2 box that I am building. It's nearly finished!!!!! I built it especially for the gaming so I have a direct start on the front end (Bigbox or emulationstation) and I modified the windows logo by a custom one ?. I play at Zelda Botw and shadow of the Tomb Rider with almost full graphics options. I am not sure if I post in the right place so let me know if am wrong and sorry for my english ?

First thing to do was to clean the ps2

IMG_20180912_191425.thumb.jpg.d7b6a42646445ce4ad78331673d5f5a7.jpg

and use epoxy to glue screws and cut the USB to Ps2 joypad to glue it inside the PS2.

IMG_20181202_201957.jpg

IMG_20190119_001514.jpg

IMG_20181202_234242.jpg

After I unsold and sold new wires in the USB to Ps2 joypad. And I unsold and sold new wires on the Pico Psu ATX plug because It's impossible to close the ps2 if I let it like that.

IMG_20190126_144001.jpg

IMG_20190129_210014.jpg

IMG_20190130_193903.jpg

It's very tight to pass this kind of Pico Psu into the ps2 box. I think, it would be more relevant to use kind of 250w Pico psu like in the picture bellow :

dc-12v-250w-mini-pico-psu-pc-atom-htpc-mini-itx.jpg

After, I just have to find the good plug for the power brick and Voilà!!

IMG_20190213_221645.jpg

IMG_20190213_224852.jpg

Now I had to do 2 new buttons for the front. I used the "power on" button for the power and I used the CD open buton for the reset. I can't use the original ps2 circuit bord for it because it's micro sold and I have ... big fingers... So I cut a part from the original CD driver plastic of the ps2 and Adapted to accommodate my buttons, resistors and LEDs. It's ugly but it works ??

IMG_20190220_214246.jpg

IMG_20190220_235854.jpg

IMG_20190220_235956.jpg

I cut a piece of plastic for the back, it's a little bit shity, I will re-do it and I still have to put 2 x usb port in the front panel of the ps2 for the charging and the Bluetooth of the Dualshock3 wireless pads. For the moment a use mother's board usb from the behind.

IMG_20190223_140056.jpg

IMG_20190223_183222.jpg

Voila Voilà, it's all for the hardware of the beautifull PS2 ?

I used some tricks for softwares like :

- to change the indows boot logo with HackBGRT

- create a offline and inline shortcut in bigbox for steam with batch files. Needed for when I bring my ps2 to play with friends.

- Set the leds of Dualshocks 3 in real order with scpserver and devreorder to working.

Thx Linustechtips for the free place to share with other

Am back guys with a question. When I play to Assassin's creed, my PS2 is coming hot like a hell, I would like to put a fan but I don't know if I have to rejected the air inside or outside?

@Ross Siggers any suggestion?

@DECLO What sort of directions of airflow do you have in the case? If it doesn't affect an intake fan near it, I would drill a grid pattern of small holes in the underside of the console, as much as you can get away with whilst not effecting the structural rigidity of the case.

You want as much of a skeleton case as you can with SFF builds like these. If you look at the cases actually manufactured, they're perforated everywhere. The only reason I won't be following my own advice is, my CPU intake fan is on the underside. I don't want to put exhaust ventilation too near it, or I'll circulate hot air back into the system :/

@Ross Siggers

Yep buddy, so I watch for other SFF and yes they have holes everywhere...

I like your idea of a grid pattern in the underside with little legs to let the air passed.

I already drill holes in the back for the graphic card and the PS2 already have a little barbecue grill in the front.

IMG_20190520_000602.jpg

IMG_20190519_234933.jpg

So I will :

- drill the back (more)

- put a big grid pattern for the underside with a filter.

- put a intake fan on the grid patern

????

No crash in 100 hours of gaming for the moment but "summer is coming"

Yes mate. It's just that I tried to spend the minimum of money for it... ?

Already 450€ with half of second hand stuff ?

Yeah my build is more expensive than expected too....low profile ram...strange format motherboard...PCIe riser cable...specialised power delivery...

Although, I bought a broken PS2 last week and WOW, SO MUCH ROOM :( I chose console poorly lol, the STX motherboard fits in the narrower section of the PS2 perfectly. I may rebuild a similar machine in a PS2 after the Dreamcast project...

@Ross Siggers yes Ross, PS2 gonna be terribly easier ?...

I saw your post of your dreamcast. I get so much trouble too with 2 cheap irons of 10 box. I am not good at it but finally with patience it s working even if you have to solder hundreds of wires.?

For example, I solder so many wires for the fxxxing screen of this build below :

IMG_20190521_001737.thumb.jpg.6c722bef5c1c0768928d8a7e35c15920.jpgIMG_20190521_001814.thumb.jpg.569a0ee9861fe9a5a82376ec7b7f8768.jpg

So much pain ?? But working Ahah! ?

Lol, in the PS2, i even broke a square of the Pico Psu and I solder it like a badass in the resistor :

I am really not good at it ?

:) haha, not at all... But look like ;) I just launch Bigbox (frontend) instead of explorer.exe from windows by only write the path of Bigbox.exe (or any program that you want...) instead of explorer.exe in the keyregistry here :shell-comspec-malware-registry-2.png.3d92065c080694b2133c712f4f30c91a.png (very easy)

After I only change the windows 10 boot logo by a custom logo that I created with paint. I use a little easy program to do it (HackBGRT).

When I need to install something I go back in windows desktop by runing explorer.exe in taskmanager. Like this :

Ctrl + alt + delStarting-explorer.exe-in-Task-Manager.png.fc6a18c676ffbb533c1af65e4b9505d5.png

;)

Awesome! Me and some tried to do this with a 1070 and 6600 but gave up because he refused to remove the useless optical drive... Our problem is that the super compact pico psus aren't powerful enough to drive a 1070 and 6600 so we are stuck with the much larger HDplex 400w, your project has certainly given me some inspiration to pick back up the project but we don't have the resources or time currently...

why no dark mode?

A 250w Pico psu should be enough I think for a 1070 without HDD drive.

Yes yes I know, if you listen the internet,  bigger is better... Hopefully I didn't ask for mine because people would say me without a 400w PSU, that will never work... Blablabla.... That's work perfect for me, it's not CIA files ?

Yes, you are correct. A 250W PSU can power a 1070, however these "250W" PSUs only have MAX 15A on the 12V rail and that's not 250W... it's 180W but they can say it's "250W" becuse the 12V max & 5V max =250W, plus I need to power a 6600 as well (a "65W" CPU but it's intel and we are know how their TDP doesn't actually line up with power consumption) I have already looked into using a bunch of different small pico PSUs

OK, so maybe try a 300w Pico psu, no ?

Mine is only 160w...

If you had bad issues, maybe it was because of your power brick?

Nope, even these "300W" boards only do 12A (some up to 15A) on the 12V rail, I tried to find one that could do at least 20A but could not

20A for a 12V... You mine 12Vx20A=240w instead of 12vx15A=180w

? I take the risk ?

(edit) it's mean that it's nearly the same Pico psu than my 160w?... Why it's so big so???
