We may see more and more games using Vulkan since it's a graphics API that covers both Windows and Google Stadia (Linux).

In this case, at least we got a Playstation exclusive at all. Sucks that it's exclusive on Epic for a year but read above. At least they didn't pull a Metro: Exodus. 

I just wished the epic games store wasn't garbage and insecure af. I dont mind them getting a deal with Sony to port it to PC because that is them going and doing something actively to help a game to market rather than just swooping in at the end work a bag of cash. This is one of those games I wouldn't have much of a problem buying from them if they didn't have such a horrible store.

And all you need is a GPU from 2012 (Radeon GCN and Kepler on nV Side), so there isn't really a reason to not do it.

 

Linux doesn't have anything to do with that, that you can use a low level API that might be close to the PS4 API and also support it from Windows 7 onwards does.

Windows 7 now supports dx12

Yes and porting a game isn't done in a day, it takes at least a month, probably a Year or half a year.

Even if it is possible or will be, that was not known when they started the development of the game...

Guys, it's not like the game actually USES a lot of DirectX 12 features ...

 

All scenes are in small locations or areas (I think the scene where they break the store doors and steal androids is the largest area), so small maps, small amount of textures, everything's scripted to hell, they used motion capture to get every character animation pre-calculated ....

 

Vulkan was probably just easier to use and allow porting to other stuff in the future

Not quite. Microsoft had implemented a handful of DX12 APIs i to Windows 7 and selectively enabled them for certain games. It is not full DX12, and it's only for handpicked programs.

An application system isn't handpicked. Developers are able to apply and Microsoft will help them implement the APIs.

 

Afaik there's no way applicants will be denied, though I will admit I don't know everything about the system so could be wrong.

If microsoft make the changes so in direct x 12 the OS can translate the information to the  video card there is no limit on who can run it.

 

Once the library is installed as long as the OS relate the info to the component (graphic card in this case) anyone can code couple lines of code to use it (if you know how). Unless that version of the library required a special key to use it (that is another story) anyone can code for it.

Even if DX12 is backported on a system wide level to Windows 7, there's just one problem. Windows 7 uses WDDM 1.1, whereas Windows 10 uses WDDM 2.x. WDDM 2.x included an efficiency overhaul, among other features that DX12 leverages. So only a subset of DX12's features can ever really be used on Windows 7.

No, it's just that the poster child who uses Vulkan, id software, knows how to code efficient engines. You'd also need to compare it on the same game with a DX12 and Vulkan render path to make a fair comparison, which I've only found one game that has: Ashes of the Singularity. The one reviewer I found who tested this (https://www.overclockersclub.com/reviews/aots_v24_dx12_vulkan/) found that the Vulkan render path doesn't dramatically improve the overall experience over DX12.

 

The API largely doesn't matter, what matters is how you use it.

 

EDIT: I realized the reviewer used an AMD A10-5800K. You might be tempted to go "of course they wouldn't get a better experience, the GPU is being bottlenecked!"

 

Except this is exactly where low-overhead API would help. It's supposed to help games in a CPU bound situation. Since you can't normally change what the game is doing to bring out more CPU usage, the only other way to force a CPU bound situation is to lower the CPU performance.

Once the library is installed as long as the OS relate the info to the component (graphic card in this case) anyone can code couple lines of code to use it (if you know how). Unless that version of the library required a special key to use it (that is another story) anyone can code for it.

In the statement Microsoft released about this they stated it's an application system. The APIs are not being made public as far as I'm aware.
