Ryzen 3 1200 vs i3 8100

Hi! I'm in a dilemma between:

R3 1200

B450

8GB 3000MHz DDR4

RX 580 4GB

OR

i3 8100

B360

8GB 2666MHz

RX 560 2GB

Both build cost the same in total, it will only be used for League of Legends & CS:GO. From what I know, LoL and CS:GO (DX9)are highly CPU dependant, it relies on single core performance, the higher the clock speed is/the better single core performance /IPC, the higher the FPS will be.

Here's a little story:

RX 580 is really underutilized in LoL and CS:GO (1080p max settings), it sits on 10-20% usage, and I only get 150FPS average (in both games). But in any other games, my RX 580 works well with my R5 1600 (@4GHz), 80-100%/80-100% for CPU/GPU usage. I recently got a good deal on GPU, I picked up a Vega 56 for $190, I pair it with my 4GHz R5 1600, still no improvement on League of Legends & CS:GO. After doing some research, I decided to go to my friends' house (we play LoL & CS:GO together like 24/7). He owns i7 7700K (but non overclocked) and GTX 1050Ti, I tested League at 1080p maxed out settings and I was really surprised because he got an average of a whopping 300FPS while I only got an average of 150-180FPS that dropped to 70-80FPS in a heavy team-fight which is really sad. I swapped his GTX 1050Ti with my Vega 56, there are no difference, still 300+FPS.

So, I think LoL and CS:GO is indeed highly single core dependent. Do you think getting i3 8100/RX 560 is better than R3 1200/RX 580 IF you only play those two games?

I'm building this PC for our friend, we play LoL and CS:GO a lot together, he's currently playing on his 5 years old laptop.

the r3 1200 isn't going to have as strong of performance as the 8100, but it's (and the r3 2200G) way better value than the 8100. The 8100 is pretty garbage value in terms of price to performance.

also, I wouldn't pick up an RX 560 unless the budget is that low. Getting an r3 2200g or r3 1200 should give you more money to pick up an RX 570 (the 570 fucking destroys the 1050 Ti, by the way), GTX 1660, or RX 580.

The R3 has an upgrade path to new CPUs soon, the i3 can only go up to 9th gen. The cost is also hard to justify, at 30% more expensive for the i3 for about 10% more single threaded capacity or so.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

He doesn't care about the upgradeability btw, he's a total normie, that's why he can still be happy playing League below 60fps at 720p on a 5/6 years old laptop. The one who are concerned is me and my friend haha

I'd opt for the AM4 platform, with a good budget B450 motherboard (Asrock B450M Pro4 is recommended..) With these boards, you'll be able to run 3rd gen ryzens as well, after updating UEFI.

Or even better, get MSI Gaming Plus B450M, which only has 2 ram slots, but you'll run dual channel anyways, so no point in 4 slots. But I prefer MSI boards due to their more user-friendly and costumizable BIOS/UEFI, and easier OC-ing capabilities.

Ryzen 1200 is cheap, ~ 65 eur new, no need to buy 2nd hand

In Hungary, probably the best seller 3000Mhz ram kit nowadays is patriot viper 4. The germans can get it even cheaper than us. And I'm pretty certain it'll work well with B450M Pro4, though it is not on their QVL list.

For other options, or something from their QVL, refer to this site

BQ PP10-11 are best sellers in my country as well, due to their reasonable price. Why is it so cheap at your location? :) I envy it..

I'd rather buy a 500GB SSD, costs marginally more than a 250GB, but you'll have more space (heck, you can even bypass needing a HDD)

Adata Ultimate SU650 480gb ~ 55€

WesternDigital Blue 500 GB ~ 60€

Oh, and though 8100 is faster than 1200 or even 1300x, the difference in performance is really not that significant. You'll get a better package with ryzen&RX580&Fast CL16 ram kit

Life is really challenging. I don't always suceed: )

What. I can't find a brand new R3 1200 for €65 anywhere, guess I'll have to go used, knowing that processor isn't a concerning part to buy used unless it's been overclocked brutally.

Probably it's because Be Quiet is a Germany brand, so we local f*ckers are able to get it even cheaper ?

I thought mindfactory actually has them for that price.

And for BQ: does not matter that much. You buy a PSU for more years, so no worth fussing about a few euros.. : o)

Yes, ofc I know that MX500 performs the same as 860 Evo, but the 860 Evo is €44 so it's €5 cheaper and it's Samsung, the re-sell value will be higher, I guess. And for the cooler, it's way better than its stock cooler. I'll sell the stock cooler for $10 then get the Gammaxx 400 ? Thanks for your time btw

not to be rude, but I don't really see much point in getting a custom cooler for such a low power, cool CPU. I guess you could try doing a nice overclocking on it but the budget motherboard isn't built for that so I don't see much use

besides maybe that it looks nice. Idk, we all make choices that may not make sense to other people so go ahead and get whatever cooler and happy building!

Just please, let us know the final decisiöns. Esp Mobo&SSD.

For budget B450 boards, Asrock B450M HDV, Gigabyte B450m DS3H or Asrock B450M Pro4 are fine options. The former two being below 70~ euros, the latter is a bit tinier more.

Should I look for a good 3000Mhz ram kit on the qvl of Pro4?

pretty much any RAM should probably be fine but if there's RAM you can find that's on the QVL and a decent price than definitely pick it up.

For the mobo, which one do you prefer,

ASRock Fatal1ty X370 Gaming K4

ASRock X370 Gaming X

ASRock B450 Pro 4

ASRock B450 Steel Legend

Which one is the best overall out of the bunch? The board that can handle overclocked R3 3300/X or R5 3600/X, if possible.

P.S. They cost the same in our local shop, they're all €87/$100.

I'll definitely do that, thanks for the suggestion.

The X-boards have better VRM, which is definitely good for OC-ing, and later upgrade to ryzen 3xxx would require updated UEFI anyway, so, they are fine. Just make sure you have the latest UEFI installed, as I'M sure it'll mean better memory support& OC-ability

I'd opt for Gaming K4 if I were you. Just keep in mind, they will only be compatible with 2-3gen ryzens after update!

You say that now, but if you're able to put a way better CPU in there in like 2 years or so, its a bonus.

You can't do that with Intel, especially since the Used Market is totally in the toilette (=far too expensive for what you get).

May I know why? I thought X370 (and any other newer chipset) will support until 2020, which is 4 generation, 1st Gen Ryzen, Zen+, Zen 2, and 4th Gen Ryzen in 2020.

Yes, they'll be compatible, but, you must update UEFI before you'd be able to use a 2nd or 3rd gen Ryzen on a 3xx series board (X370, B350). It's just a minor point, nothing to worry about.

He doesn't care about the upgradeability btw, he's a total normie, that's why he can still be happy playing League below 60fps at 720p on a 5/6 years old laptop. The one who are concerned is me and my friend haha

I mean if you want to play only those 2 games, screw both of those builds, especially if you're broke college students paying for this PC with student loan debts. Get a Ryzen 3 2200g and don't even bother getting a graphics card. Seriously. Assuming he's using a 60hz monitor, a 2200g will play both of those games at 1080p high without dropping below 60fps 99.9% of the time. No I am not joking. Look at this video

.1% lows are above 60fps. Worried about massive teamfights dropping below 60fps? No problem. Get a cheap B350 board, crank it up to 3.9ghz rather than the stock settings shown in the video, turn the settings down to high instead of the very high shown in the video and now you're cooking with gas. For these games from 2009 and 2012 respectively, there's no point in getting a graphics card when very capable APUs like the 2200g exist.
