SSD & RAM price

Hello,

I'd like to ask if SSD storage and RAM price could / will drop even more. Is this a good time for buying SSD & RAM, or wait a bit more?

I can't tell you that, but I don't think so. At least, SATA SSDs are dirt cheap now. As for RAM, I'm really not sure, but I just purchased a 16GB 3200MHz C14 RAM kit and I'm still crying.

Most likely yes, however, there is no point on continuously waiting. It becomes a never-ending question of "will it be cheaper next month?". 3 years ago I bought Corsair Vengeance LED 2x16GB 3000MHz RAM for $280, last year I bought GSkill Ripjaws V 2x8GB 2800MHz RAM for $200. Prices change and it's not worth waiting or trying to predict the market. Buy now you won't regret it.

I guess I bought Corsair Vengeance the same time, and didn't have clue about hardware cost alterations; still don't know if it was good deal or else. Probably should get the TridentZ while they are still available.

With regards to memory pricing, years ago was how it was today (when I got my 32GB Corsair kit), and a year ago all RAM was excessively overpriced. This just goes to show how the market changes, pricing from brand rarely differs by much, although Corsair tends to be a slightly more expensive option but often it is in line with offerings from GSkill etc. This is why it is not worth waiting for prices to drop, in 3 months it may go up again, we just don't know.

 

NAND flash (SSD's) likely will become cheaper as it becomes easier to manufacture, and more readily available, but again, this is not certain.

I read on a site something about 96 layer flash, which will / might bring down the price of the regular SSDs.

I was lucky back in 2012 when I bought a 2x2 and a 2x4 DDR3 modules for two of my builds and weeks later the memory actually doubled in prices.

When I built my Ryzen system I'm using now a few months ago I paid $86 for an 8 gig DDR4 module. Few weeks ago I bought another 8 gig DDR4 module for $56.

DDR5 is already in use for HPC so I would expect it to keep falling a bit slowly though

I bought a 32 gb kit in January and it was $360 Canadian, same kit is about $50 cheaper now. Its annoying when that stuff happens but at the end of the day you just have to pull the trigger when its at a price you're comfortable paying and than not worrying later if its cheaper

keep waiting, prices are dropping fast recent months and still arent stable yet.

Rams are finally back to reasonable prices now and I'd expect ssd to drop much more with the qlc and over supply. at least wait for another 2-3 months

It'll drop over time as the technology advances. That said, prices are very reasonable right now, and if you're in need of an SSD or RAM, go ahead and buy away.

Same thing happened to me; bought Adata three months back which is almost half the price now.

Sometimes one hardware is expensive and others become reasonable. Though I wonder, actually everything is still expensive, individually every component. Technology isn't supposed to be that expensive.

If they do change, it won't be by much. 4 years later, the Samsung 860 Evo 250GB is around 50% what I paid for my Samsung 850 Evo 250GB. 500GB 860 Evo is down around 25% from what I paid for my 500GB 850 Evo back in early 2017.

 

So unless you're planning on waiting a few years, you might as well buy now.

The first completed chip was announced last November.

 

That's some fast turn around time from tape out to deployment.

It is but that's because HPC is on the bleeding edge and there's lots of money involved
