Manual vs automatic transmission

Haha, wrong sub forum to post this...

Depends where you live. If you do a lot of heavy city driving then an automatic makes a lot of sense.

The only reason to get a automatic imo are if you are extremely lazy, or just have a disability.

i cant stand driving automatics and it ruins the entire occasion of car driving.

And the car you are buying is a sporty car and you will HATE yourself for buying it, if you want a car with an automatic get the cheapest possible since its going to be just as fun to drive as that STI automatic.

Automatic is really just a waste.. Not only does it ruin any bit of fun of the vehicle, but it also makes it a 100times more boring. Manual FTW

Depends what you think. If you don't have any problem driving an auto, then go for it.

i once had this crazy probably unrealistic idea but what if cars in the future where to have voice activated gear switching? you could turn it off if say someone else was in the car with you since it would be weird then but if alone i think it would be cool :P

It depends on where you're from, if you're from the US, go automatic, Europe, go manual.

Haha, manual transmissions are dead. Dual clutch is the future.

Do you own a dual clutch transmission car ?.

I've driven a half automatic car (DSG) and they are fucking impossible to drive in cities and park well, and i bought the same model but manual instead (Golf R32 -06)

the future my ass it feels like driving a car by remote controll with those shitty flappy paddles.

EDIT: Check maintenance cost for those transmissions and you've lost yet another reason to drive a dual clutch.

Manual FTW. I mean, auto would just get annoying after a bit, and you don't get the satisfaction of changing gear, it's what driving is all about. I mean fair enough if you just can't work a clutch, but if you can drive then you'll be happier with a manual imo

Pretty sure the Subaru WRX STI Version does not come with Automatic. It most likely a Subaru WRX , not STI.
Manual is very fun to drive,It all depends on what type of person you are while driving. Do you like shifting or do you just want to drive without shifting.
If you get the Manual one, The STI model, you will have  a blast. I'd suggest you take learn manual, if you have not already. :) It will be worth while

So, you're basing the technology on one of the first mass produced units? You should never base any tech on it's first mass production run. Of course it'll get better over the years.

In the city wouldn't it make more sense to not use the paddle shifters at all? A large majority of my friends that live in the city have switched from standard cars to automatics simply because it's more of a pain than anything else.

You know what has lower maintenance costs than a manual? An automatic. So that's a moot point.

DSG/semi automatic is the future. A ton of high performance cars are going in that direction. The new 911 GT3 RS, McLaren, Aventador.

An interesting tidbit of information. In 2010, only 3.8% of cars sold in the US were manual.

the guy im buying from switched the transmisson to an automatic.. whata idiot

That's a really odd decision. Is it cheaper than a standard of the same car?

What makes you want to go with it?

DSG's are not the future since there always will be people that prefer the manual, in both every day cars and in high performance cars.

I've driven all 3 and the one i liked the least is the DSG, since it costs a shitload, feels even more unatural then the full automatic does and its heavier then a manual.

oh and they are a lot more expensive to manufacture since they are more complex.

i can post facts too

http://www.autoblog.com/2012/05/01/car-buyers-falling-back-in-love-with-manual-transmissions/

When i got my 06 golf R32 i tested both the DSG and the manual, and when i asked for pricing on the DSG vs manual my last shed of doubt vanished and i went manual.

have you test driven any new DSG's / automatics ?.

My first work i drove a truck for a living and it have 16 gears and it was manual and i loved every bit of it.

I'm Danish and I did indeed learn to drive a manual car as my first. I do think that if you're buying an STI you should by all means keep it manual if you can. I can understand automatics when it comes to big Audis and Mercedes, but STI's are cars with a motorsport pedigree,  and I would think that you're buying it to enjoy the car as much as possible. You feel so much more in contact with your car when you're driving with a manual transmission, and doing otherwise with an STI would be nothing but a damn waste. Those cars deserve to be driven hard, and the only way you can do that is with a manual transmission.

My apologies if my post makes no sense, I'm thoroughly drunk at the time of writing.
