is raid a thing i should do?

so i own a gaming/work pc...

it had 2 ssd's (1 m.2 and 1 normal 2.5)

and 2 hdd's (1 tb and 2 tb)

a freind told me i should raid them for beter speed....but i dont even know if its needed?

i use my main m.2 ssd as windows ssd and importent progrems

while the 2.5 is games mainly.

 

the other 2 are just for files really. (editings and files i saved like 3D works and stuff)

 

is raid even a thing i should go for?

if so do i raid all of them? do i need to back up everything?

and most importent IS it a pain in the butt?

Its a huge pain in the butt, mostly because you already have everything partitioned. If you are willing to clean install, it's not that bad!

SSDs are fast enough without Raid 0, and since you only use the hard drives for files that don't need a lot of speed, putting them in Raid wouldn't be worth the trouble.

RAID is only useful for increasing sequential reads/writes, but it actually makes random reads/writes worse. With SSDs there's literally zero point in going with RAID in the first place, and with HDDs, increased sequential speeds are really only useful for video-editing and such tasks where you handle large, contiguous files.

first off, you can't use raid on any of these drives. Raid likes to have the same capacity drives, and performance suffers if you have drives at different speeds (NVMe vs SATA SSD, etc.) 

Second, Raid isn't really necessary anymore. Most drives are fast enough as is. 

So no. Don't use raid with them. Please.

RAID will not give you better speed other than in Sequential, which is literally useless, and actually somewhat lowers 4K/random speeds.

RAID 5 is good as a backup for when one of your drives fail (it's not a backup per-se if for example both drives die), but that's clearly not what you're trying to do here.

Plus, it won't even work because you need the same size drives.

If you need fast drives, get good NVMe drives (such as the 970 EVO or 970 PRO). If you need extremely fast drives, get Optane drives. Warning: NVMe drives are significantly more expensive than SATA drives, and Optane has legitimate rates of 1.5$/GB in some cases

As others have said, your current drives wouldn't work in raid to begin with. Also as someone who ran raid 0 hdds for several years i would recommend against it. running off your motherboards raid controller will increase boot times as the raid has to initialize. Also the risk associated with it are more than most people are willing to accept, even if its just game files. ( I lost a drive once and even though i just had games on it i had to re download over 500 gb of games :/). 

 

TLDR: RAID isn't worth it in a desktop.

allready own a nvme (the m.2 is a preety decent nvme ssd from samsung dont remember its name tho 3000writes or somthing)

i got my answer!

and i got the point!

so my nvme ssd and 2.5 will do the job anyways! thanks for clearing it out tho!

ill stay away from raid after seeing all u guys said!
