Show off your Lego!

I;m not judging mate, I'm not a Lego Snob, it was in jest :)

I know... but I'm honestly aware of the hypocrisy I show by being in favour of supporting democracy and freedoms... for the rights of Hong Kong, Tibet and Taiwan... whilst posting on a tech site that talks about stuff that's mostly built by that same oppressive regime that puts minorities in concentration camps, commits genocide, harvest the organs of it's own people and demands that people worship the state on pain of death.

Disclaimer

Yes, I’ve read the "This thread is old!" warning and decided to post anyway.

Subsection, title of OP, keywords still fit and I don’t see the need for a new "Show off your Lego! (part II)" thread.

This is my Raspberry Pi controlled LEGO mecanum wheel "roadster".

001_Roadster_Display_Small_quant.thumb.png.ea3fc68fbfb211676796ead6baffdae4.png

Ever since I saw a DJI RoboMaster S1, I wanted one of those…

… but I did not want to spend the money (Little did I know what was to come. Curse you Bricklink!😉).

And when the Qihui 9802 Jaeger Master was released, I already was too invested in my own project.

I wanted to reuse the 'old' LEGO Power Function IR Receivers to control the four XL motors.

005_Roadster_Interior_Zoom_Collage_Small_quant.thumb.png.7905f22de2be3af13dcbe94b76e5b7fd.png

So I took my Raspberry Pi and a power bank, added some wires, transistors and IR LEDs, wrote a python script and... voilà!

It’s funny how months of work, frustration, sweat and tears can appear so simple and easy in hindsight. But since this is a “LEGO show-off” thread, I won’t bother you with the non-LEGO details.

Maybe just two things I like to mention.

1. IT WORKS! All the additional movements you’d expect from a vehicle with omnidirectional wheels work; strafing, turning on the spot, driving diagonally and more. "Normal driving" works like a vehicle with tracks (e.g. driving curves -> inner wheels turn slower)

Spoiler

modified battery packs

006_Roadster_BattPack_Small_quant.thumb.png.a79c795f4b19351ac5df721c5835f722.png

2. I did modify the LEGO battery packs for the motors. Each now holds three rechargeable lithium cells. Those 14500* cells are a smidge longer then your typical AA batteries and therefore some dremelling was required. The 11.1V** really make a difference when it comes to the speed*** of the model.

* type of cell, not the quantity

** 3x3.7V, up from the usual 9V (6x1.5V)

*** It’s not fast, but feels adequate.

Not gonna lie, this is one of the coolest Lego projects I've seen.

That's crazy cool and I'd love to drive with that 😄

Can you make a driving video of it? Would be nice to see it in action.

Also, those kinds fo threads imo should never be locked because nobody replied in some time, they can always be revived.

LEGO WALL.  It is currently a Sisyphean nightmare right now or else I'd get a better picture.  Two items have been added since this picture was taken: Saturn V rocket and the International Space Station.  (Plus I have since given the AT-AT to my nephew, so he's no longer walkin' around up there)

This is the Minecraft World (v3), a project that's been worked on since 2016.

v1 was a lot bigger and stupider, and was taken apart because we had to do some bedroom work.

v2 was the first revision of v3, but it had some things changed around that ended up not working when we got more sets.

v3 is the current revision, and it's likely never to change because then I'd need to get more RCX wires.

Anyway, here's a video:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ujAzPG3jXKxwFa54HuUvoQ0WnUBvUau0/view?usp=sharing

If you look towards the top left, that's the beginning. That, at its core, is The Cave and The Iron Golem. I got these back in 2016.

As you move towards the bottom right, you'll see 3 modules of The Crafting Box 2.0. Then, you'll see The Chicken Coop and the Igloo. If you go straight right, you'll see The Dungeon and The Zombie Cave. Above is The End Portal, and to the right of that is The End Battle.

Continuing past the bulk of The Crafting Box 2.0, you'll see The Mushroom Island and The Pirate Ship.

Past The Igloo and above The Pirate Ship you'll see The Ice Spikes.

Now, going below The Chicken Coop you'll see The Nether Portal. Past that is most of The Nether Railway, The Skull Arena and The Nether Fortress.

The Pillager Outpost is separate as there isn't a good spot to put it yet, but my brother's asking for The Witch Hut for his birthday and it fits well there.

The Ender Dragon is slightly broken because we lost some parts, the starting area is under construction because I need to figure out how to work in a motor for the zombie spawnier, and the pirate ship is separate because, well, it doesn't fit well.

Yes, I made it the ship of Poultry Man.

What?
I'm a big Grian fan.

Anyway, next we have the RCX system.

I bought this last year and it's still not done even though I have all the parts (I blame COVID).

I somehow got a 1.0 brick with a serial number about 300,000, so... ok?
Anyway, the main attraction is the arrow launch.

I used 3 of the 6 ports on it - 2 touch sensors and 1 motor.

I forgot this in the video, but at the platform where there's usually a dark gray tile, I elevated and changed it so it activates a touch sensor.

This will then tell the motor in the skill to move forwards for a set amount of time, then back until the other touch sensor is triggered, giving it a constant base 0 position.

Then, I also have 2 lamps that make the fires glow, and once I finalize the program, I'll have it "flicker" a bit. Not too much though.

I've also got the Light sensor lighting up the End Crystal in the End.

And finally, I have the last motor port driving the zombie spawner in The Dungeon. This part isn't done yet, as I need to make sure it works consistently and is completely hidden.

I'm also planning to make the minecarts in the Nether move by themselves with some small motors and wheels. I have a basic frame idea built for them, but it's not stable enough to go on the Minecraft world, so it's in the red box. Plus, I still need to figure out which motors I need and how I'm going to power them.

Thank you!

I had to move some furniture in my living room, but here you go...

LEGO_mecanum_rover_MOC.mp4

music: https://www.purple-planet.com/passport

It really struggles with moving sideways on carpet, but my kitchen isn't large enough to shoot a video😉

edit:

Okay, the uploaded webm file won't play (in my browser) and now it only displays a 24kB uploaded file. I'll look into it on the weekend(?). I'll just have to find a way to get the video file <20MB and in a [dis]playable format🙄

Playback in the browser does not work (for me), but at least the file is downloadable. It's a low quality mp4 and I can claim, that the "dirt" on the carpet are compression artifacts😋

Edited by OSKrueger
The video did not show/play; 2nd edit: and still doesn't :-(, n-th edit: now it's at least downloadable

I feel you on the ISD. I picked mine up when LEGO first came out with the set but it's still in the box. I got too many sets still NIB: The Apollo 11 Lunar Lander, Big Ben, International Space Station, Taj Mahal, the Mustang, and The White House now...I picked up the SHIELD Helicarrier NIB in Sept. 2020, but I still have no room to build it. I do have this MOC "Rainbow" Mi-28 Havoc Heli that I created. I did have a MH-53 Pave Low at one time but I disassembled it to make the Havoc. I did make a school bus and a diesel engine "Rainbow" edition as well!

What I do currently have out in my room is the Saturn V rocket, the London bus, James Bond 007 Aston Martin DB5, the Space Shuttle that came out many years ago (can't recall the exact name), Tower Bridge, and the Sydney Opera House. I do have some sets that are from Mega Bloks with their Probuilder series with military vehicles.

Some of these pictures are really old, but they pretty much are all in my room.

I also have Lego 6380 (I forgot that) that I got it for my Christmas gift about 30 years ago. It was disassembled (I found this tray with items) and I mounted it all about 2 years ago when I found a plan on web 🙂

It's a bit different because a few items missed so I replaced by other color and I didn't find items for the emergency car 😞

Oh man, those take me back.  I had all kinds of buildings and structures from that line.  I also loved their space/UFO line of sets.

Also apparently Lego now includes this OP tool with every set:

You can take a look at all of the Tech that I own and have owned over the years in my About Me section and on my Profile.

I'm Swiss and my Mother language is Swiss German of course, I speak the Aargauer dialect. If you want to watch a great video about Swiss German which explains the language and outlines the Basics, then click here.

If I could just play Videogames and consume Cool Content all day long for the rest of my life, then that would be sick.

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

~Sniped Photo~

Lmfao no I did not. I did mainly use my fingernails to try and separate the bricks - especially the flat bricks. When I was building the Bonsai Tree and the Statue of Liberty, I used the brick separator a couple times and kick myself in the ass for not knowing better.
