What Monitor Hz do I get? Gtx 1060 6gb core i5 6400

MasterGuardian

Hey guys, I was looking into buying a new monitor. I'm looking to play at 1920x1080, but I have no clue what refresh rate monitor I should get. I have a gtx 1060 6gb and a core i5 6400 and want to play on High-Medium settings most AAA games, I'm looking to spend about $200-$300 CAD. Will my pc be capable of playing on a 25'' 144hz monitor or should I get something lower? Thank you for all of your wonderful answers!

Your CPU will have trouble pushing 144hz in AAA games. Usually e-sport games are what hit over 144hz. Your PC would be able to hit 144 in csgo.

Consider a Freesync monitor since your 1060 is compatible with Freesync after the driver updates. You have to be on windows 10, though.

I am looking to play Anthem with my friends, if I get a 144hz monitor can I play on high settings at 144hz? over 60fps

I would say buy a 144hz monitor. You will have some games that can run above 60 fps that the 144hz will make a noticible difference. Also you can upgrade your pc later down the road and have a monitor that can utilize the extra power. You keep monitors for awhile so it's important to get a nice one out of the gate rather than buy a cheap one now and have to upgrade to a new one when you upgrade your pc.

No way to tell until it comes out. Also you don't need to run at higher than 6p fps just because you have a 144hz monitor. You won't see as much of a benifit if you don't go over 60 fps but there isn't any harm in that.

Given all those are competitive high paced games I'd say buy the 144hz one, do be advised though that your i5 6400 is not a 144fps capable CPU due to weak single thread performance and you might even go all low settings you won't get more fps as the limiting factor won't ever be the GPU.

For those esport games like overwatch and csgo it should be able to hit high fps. The difference between 60hz and 144hz will be massive in those games.

So Should I go with 75hz? Maybe 120 hz? I only want to play on High and Medium

If you get a 144hz monitor you can set the refresh rate to 75 inside of Nvidia's control center

Just get a 144hz monitor. Try and get a freesync monitor as they usually cost the same as a normal 144hz monitor yet they have variable refresh rate. Make sure it's freesync through display port though.

here are some monitor suggestions that have 144hz and variable refresh rate that you can use.

https://www.amazon.com/Acer-XFA240-bmjdpr-Response-Technology/dp/B06ZYHZ6R6/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=Acer+KG251QF&qid=1548198313&sr=8-2

https://www.amazon.com/AOC-C27G1-Frameless-DisplayPort-Adjustable/dp/B07GD5XG5G/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1547674683&sr=8-2&keywords=AOC+C27G1&tag=httpwwwtechsp-20

I think the Viotek monitor is probably the best choice because it has a high variable refresh-rate range for freesync. I should note that Nvidia just recently added freesync support to 10 series and 20 series gpus so you should be able to take advantage of freesync on these monitor which will be great for your use case. I should also note that hardware unboxed tested the Viotech and the AOC monitors and freesync worked just fine using an Nvidia gpu.
