I think I'd be inclined to use a cone of shame here... just because wounds closing/scabbing can be itchy, and wouldn't want her to tear it open again.

Good point. We'll be keeping a close eye on her just in case, but hopefully won't need one.

The Ontario government is discussing a bill brought forward to end the pitbull ban in the province. The data shows that bite incidents have increased since the ban was implemented back in 2005. Hmmm...

 

REALLY hoping this is passed and the ban is lifted. Too many dogs have been needlessly killed because of how they "look".

 

The breed isn't the issue, people are.

if a municipality bans a certain breed of dog, and you can prove that there is more then 1/1000000'th of another breed in the dog, then are you allowed to keep the dog?

What they did here was ban "bully breeds" and defined that as anything that "looks like" a pitbull type dog. So muscular body, squarish head, etc. This includes pitbulls, american bulldogs, taffishire terriers, and anything that looks like that. It's kind of dumb though because those other breeds aren't pitbulls and it's debatable what exactly is a pitbull, since they are a mix of other breeds. It's a very grey area.

 

We have a pit mix, but we have her registered with our vets as a "bulldog mix" which means if something happens and there's an investigation, the vet's word will hold up and no one can claim she is actually a pit.

 

Dogs that were already adopted when the ban was initiated were grandfathered in and could be kept. But you technically can't bring pits into Ontario nor adopt nor rescue pits in Ontario. They will get shipped out to the US typically.

He's doing better, actually. We were able to get him to start eating again and he's regained some strength. He seems to go through these slumps where he kind of starves himself for a few days, becomes weak, then decides to eat again and bounces back. Hopefully he's ok and gets better.

I have a big problem with this thread.

 

Used to own two street dogs. Tiny bags of love and affection. When I moved cities, since it was I who took care of them and I was moving for work it didn't make sense to keep them. Mutts ended up with a family that treats them great. Still, I miss them with all my heart.

There were people travelling from Fort McMurray in Alberta when the fires hit. They were heading out east and when they got to Ontario, they were told they had to surrender their pitbull or travel all the way around through the US. It's absolutely ridiculous. Strange times, indeed.

 

People still breed, own and adopt pits in Ontario, "under the radar" of course. The majority of the public doesn't care if you have them and most people we've talked to about it, love the breed. Even SPCA workers have told us that unless "something happens", there's really nothing to worry about. They can't just "take your dog".

 

Glad they're finally bringing it up for discussion again to lift the ban. Been long overdue.

In the UK, staffies aren't banned, but if they are deemed to be more Pitbull than certain %, then they can be taken and destroyed IIRC. Also here they can and will be taken and destroyed if you have a pitbull as they are illegal to be owned, bred etc. I don't agree with it at all, but I wouldn't want to have one that they could just take from me and destroy the dog, I would hate for that to happen

This is what I hate about the US and other countries that have "state" laws. This is one thing about the UK that I do like, that it's mostly one law for the UK. But some laws only cover for instance England, and Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland can have some separate laws.

For a dog that had pretty much zero impulse control less than a year ago, Olivia is just killin it. Did some proofing yesterday outside the dog park. Calm, relaxed and unfazed. So proud of her.

We just welcomed a new member to the pack today! Her name is Aurora (Alaskan Malamute); she's 3 years-old and we adopted her from our local humane society (animal shelter), where she spent the last 3 months.
