Thank you, yes we think she's lovely... and her scar just gives her more personality, if you can even see it?

 

Yeah, I would do that if I thought the post was gonna be a long one, but just started with a few lines and got carried away... plus TBH this is the first time the site has messed up big time.. usually if it messes up, or I decide to come back to it later, then the post is still there in the editor... but this time it managed to post the pics but left ALL my text out

 

I will learn from my mistakes though, and do what I used to do on other sites that had posting problems... I just shift + ctrl + end and copy everything just before hitting the post button, so then at least it's in the clipboard if something does go awry. I used to do it your way though, going waaay back when I used to go on some other forums and their site used to do this all the time. I used to be a mod on one of them actually, and we got LOADS of complaints from people that it used to double post/not post etc... so we always recommended saving or at the very least drafting the text in an editor of some kind before posting.

2 street dogs hours away before almost put to death. We safed them 5 Years ago and since than they live with us. Sometimes i think they know what almost happened to them. They dont leave a 5m radius around any of us.

I wish I could rescue every at risk dog in the world, unfortunately I don't have the income or space though.

I don't think dogs think that way BTW, they live more in the moment than anything else, that's why they are such great characters IMO and great to be around. If they come from bad backgrounds/rescues they might have some lingering tensions from their time there though.

 

When Dink gets a bit older, I am thinking I will offer a rescue a home... she loves having other dogs around, so it might be good for both of them to have company and plays together.

Pongos (Border Collie from a friend) family has also got two cats. Pongo gets real jealous whenever family comes over and want to pat the cats, he then just sits on top of the cats till the visitors leave again and so that he gets all the attention. I gotta ask them to take a picture whenever he sits on top of the cats again

Our Henry used to do that almost all the time. It's even funnier when they run too.

 

Your Olivia is so lovely. I really wish that Pitties didn't get such a bad rep, it's not deserved at all. It's the same with Rotties too, but at least they didn't get banned in the UK. My brother that now lives with us had a Rottie called Bill when he was in Aus.. he was a gorgeous example of one. I used to walk him when I stayed with my bro, had to wait for the day to cool a bit first though, he didn't understand, poor bugger... so he would sit in front of the TV and moan to make his view of the situation clear. he was spot on though, always managed to get his head right where you're trying to look at the TV

 

Dinky doesn't sleep bark or run much, but TBH she hardly ever sleeps when there are people in the room anyway. She likes to play, all the time! But hey I'm not complaining, Henry didn't like to play that much, apart from when he liked to wriggle on the floor, when you tickled his belly or rubbed his back for him. Dinky will play with a ball, or tug rope with you all day long.

Thanks, yeah it's a real shame the damage the media and fight rings have done to bully/pit & power breeds. They are so misunderstood. The reality is that any breed has the potential to exhibit dangerous behaviour. If more people would properly train and advocate for their dogs, the drop in incidents would be dramatic. 

 

Dinky sounds like a hoot to be around. Enjoy her "puppy" days while you can.

 

The other week I went to help a client with a 3 month old rottie, and it took every ounce of will-power to restrain myself from eating her face off, lol. Her name is Milo and she was at the phase where they want to destroy and eat everything in sight. I was there to help the owner learn to teach her some manners.

No kidding. Part of the reason the power breeds get their unsavory reputation is that athey are powerful animals, giving them the potential to do a lot of damage when they "misbehave", not because they are naturally vicious. Many smaller breeds are far more likely to be naturally vicious than the larger ones. Chihuahuas, as a group, can be really vicious but they're called ankle biters for a reason.

Yep, definitely.

 

But to add to that, I believe a big part of the cause of small breeds becoming "ankle biters" is in how they are treated by the owners. Picking them up, coddling them, giving them way too much affection, allowing them to sleep on or in your bed, allowing them too much freedom, not enough structure, no consequences for bad behaviour... all of that leads to severe resource guarding and general assholery behaviour, among other issues. Smaller breeds tend to get away with more inappropriate behaviour because they can't do nearly as much damage as larger breeds, as you mentioned. That should never be an excuse for lack of training though.

I've found with small dogs I've had or taken care of that acclimating them to strangers early on dramatically reduced or eliminated that fear. I've had no problems with letting them sleep in or on the bed and they were used to being handled; some even craved it.

 

The little doxie I used to dog sit I knew from when his owner found him lost in a parking lot as a pup. He learned to not be afraid of people pretty quickly. When I kept him, I would put him on the bed (it eliminated the chances of him "marking" during the night and he would immediately burrow under the covers and sleep by my feet (all night as long as I played fetch with him to tire him shortly before bedtime). He quickly learned he had no need to be afraid of strangers. In fact, he was a hit at a party I took him to once and was a great chick magnet when I would take him to a pet store to get him a treat (sadly, all the women were either way too young or were in couples  ).

We took our chi's out and around lot's of people/strangers starting when they were really young. They still developed human-aggression & resource guarding (protecting us) because I couldn't and didn't teach them what was inappropriate behaviour at the time. Their size can be part of why they feel the need to be "extra tough", as they also call it, "small dog syndrome".

 

Not all dogs develop those behaviours, of course. But the ones that do, there's a lot of common-thread practices that lead to it and our situation was a textbook example of that. They also formed a "pack" as there was 4 of them, and that only made things worse as they all fed off each other in a frenzy. It was quite the scene once they got going... lol. If we only had one or two, things likely would have gone much smoother.

Yep, she has her moments when you want to yell at her though... she's persistent in her wants, LOL

 

I am trying to train her properly, and she likes training. She'll do most things you ask her, even if it's the first time sometimes.. and we'll be like "wow, can't believe she did that first time!"

Other times I'm pulling my hair out calling her name, and she ignores you completely... I'm, trying to work on it with her. I sit in front of her, and say her name, and most times she'll look at the treat.. and I persist until she looks at me, then she gets a "good, or yes", then the treat straight away. But sometimes she won't respond unless you have treats... too bloody intelligent I think   - I'll keep at it though, I WILL find a way to get through to her.
