was reading through that, how common is it to carry a weapon in the states, and how easy is it to actually obtain one?

 

I'm from Canada, and the only time i've dealt with one or seen was was in the military reserves for basic training.

 

 

I'm not opening this thread to start a gun law debate, just curious about what goes on down there

State laws vary from state to state, but in general if you're over 21 you can buy a pistol as long as you aren't a felon. If you buy it through a gun shop, there is a background check to ensure that you're not a felon, it usually takes 15 min or so to complete the process. We can discuss in extreme depth as to the nuances of each state and different processes, but in general this is how it works. 

 

Carrying a firearm varies from state to state, but in most states you can get a permit (lots of states now don't require a permit anymore) to carry a concealed firearm. Most states will allow people to openly carry firearms, some with a permit and others without. In my state, ND, you don't need a permit to carry a firearm, concealed or openly within the state, but if you want to leave the state, a ND permit is recognized in 43 states. 

 

As for how common is it, that's really hard to say exactly since a lot of states don't require a permit anymore. My gut says it's in the single digit percentiles. 

 

Also, from my experience, people who openly carry firearms in public are just doing it for attention, and largely should be ignored.

If you have a spotless background and provide a social security number or equivalent, it's usually very easy to purchase one or a few weapons. Typically takes about 30 minutes for a background check.

 

However, buying too many guns in a short period will cause issues.

You can't legally buy automatics without a $200 tax stamp (9-14 month long background check and a bunch of other bullshit).

Same for suppressors, short barreled rifles, stocked pistols, and short barrel shotguns.

You can't buy if you have any felony.

Any false positive (or someone sharing your name, in the same city, with a similar SSN) will jumo the background check from 30 minutes upto 30 days.

It's all going to depend on the state.

Here in Alabama, obtaining a weapon isn't a lengthy process so long as your background is clean and you provide all of the necessary information.

Purchasing certain modifications (silencers for example) do require a tax stamp to be purchased and will take a long time to go through.

Anyone convicted of a felony cannot legally purchase a weapon. This won't stop them from illegally purchasing weapons, but they cannot go to a gun store, for example, and purchase a weapon legally.

As mentioned above it is relatively easy (though still quite difficult in terms of requirements) to obtain a permit to carry in the US. I carry daily personally and for work. Depending on the state every one who applies has to go through a background check, another check (called the NICs) is performed at time of purchase for every purchase and is Federally Mandated to ensure no felonious activity was committed since the permit was issued (this includes states with no permit, though the news reports otherwise).

 

A lot of stigma is circulated about gun owners that is mostly not true. There are nuts out there that do stupid things which retards the rights of others unjustly but they are [in a number sense] a very small amount of people and its unfortunate we only hear about those incidents, but we rarely see the much greater number of stories about those that do carry that perform a public duty in defending others and in some cases assisting police or defending police.

It is very common to carry a weapon in the usa, it is very easy to obtain a weapon.

Canada is much safer, more safeguards in place because its federal.

You can buy a gun, without no license from a swap meet or a fair, whether you are in canada or the usa.

 

Also remember that if you do plan on stepping one foot inside the USA, please purchase travel health insurance, and do read the policy. It is super fucking stupid down there. When I travel, I have 3 policies that cover me.

 

Also, road rage leads to more dangerous situations down there, because weapons are more common place. So dont fuck around when you are down there.

It is not common for a normal citizen to conceal carry and it is not "easy" to obtain a firearm. Of course this is in a legal manner.

There are a lot more gun homicides, but there are also exponentially more people...so...it kind of balances out. The US is a fun place, but like anywhere else, there are places to avoid. Just do your research before you travel and you'll be perfectly fine. Because of the structure of their police system, it's not uncommon for American's to be left unprotected, which is why gun ownership has an even higher adoption rate.

Here in Alabama, obtaining a weapon isn't a lengthy process so long as your background is clean and you provide all of the necessary information.

It always kills me how almost nobody knows anything about the current gun legislation that is already in place and have no idea that most of the "reforms" they want are already active laws. Most people I've met think that AR-15s are full auto and that you can just go pick one up at Walmart in 5 minutes...

Can you expand on which point this reply to @handymanshandle was in regards to as there were several points he made...

If you're talking about purchasing suppressors (silencers) then you need to go through an application process directly with the ATF which requires a federal tax payment of $200 and a thorough criminal background check.

If you're talking about people who have been charged with a felony purchasing weapons then it is still illegal for them to buy them through any means meaning: private sale, gun store, gun show, etc. Buying a weapon from a gun show doesn't magically give felons the right to own firearms again xD

Then there are Gun Shops/Pawn Shops/Walmarts

 

Then there are illegal sales, buying stolen guns is far too easy. Seems like every criminal is carrying a piece. There are no more one on one fist fights to see who is the real man, no no the fighting that goes on now is usually the coward with the gun will live because their too afraid too fight one on one with their fists, so the bad guy will draw his gun instead of be a man.

 

There was a TV show on recently on a major gun store going out of business, so they had to send tractor trailors full of documents to the ATF. The ATF then had to anonymize the documents which took time and money. Can't be searchable by name. The ATF has paper documents that they search. It is a joke.

As stupid as the ATF using paper documents for everything sounds... there is a security practicality to it, because you really don't want any of that data getting leaked.

I live in Indiana. Here on the north side, I think that the number was about 17% of eligible adult males have a carry permit. I'd say 95% of those people do not open carry, despite in our state it being allowed with no additional hoops to jump through. 
I conceal carry myself. A lot of people carry, and most people just don't talk about it. If you're in a gas station that's got at least 10 people in there, I guarantee a couple people are carrying. It's just a normal thing, and most people don't actually understand how common it is. No one shows off their gun, or brings it up. It's kind of a private thing and a private lifestyle choice and people won't talk about it unless they're at the range or among friends. 

It's even common in places like movie theaters. After that batman shooting, pretty much everyone I've talked to in person and online from my area that carries also carry at theaters, especially now. Here, businesses can remove you if they have a no gun policy, and if you refuse to leave you can be charged with trespassing. But it's not legally enforceable, no gun signs mean nothing (barring certain cutouts, mostly government stuff and state schools). This is why most people conceal carry. You grab your gun in the morning with your keys phone an wallet. You almost forget it's there. You don't want to remove it in the car, that's dangerous. If someone can actually tell you're carrying, you're doing it wrong. I've only ever been "outed" by my pink licence in my wallet. 

Most people don't want others to be intimidated by the presence of a gun, at the same time it provides no certainty of who could be carrying, which is a deterrent. The people you hear about and see are outliers. Most people that carry aren't "gun nuts" or often even enthusiasts. They can carry, and they do. 
99.9% of people carry every day without incident. When something does happen, you typically don't hear about it unless it's gun negative or someone defending themselves in their home, like a kid or something is popular to cover. Most people, however, go their entire lives never drawing, and a small portion of people that draw have to fire.

If you're talking about purchasing suppressors (silencers) then you need to go through an application process directly with the ATF which requires a federal tax payment of $200 and a thorough criminal background check.

If you're talking about people who have been charged with a felony purchasing weapons then it is still illegal for them to buy them through any means meaning: private sale, gun store, gun show, etc. Buying a weapon from a gun show doesn't magically give felons the right to own firearms again xD
