170 dollar windows 10?

MechaToaster

Why is windows 10 170$ right now? It will end up making me have to give up an ssd due to the major price Increase.

wIn 10 pro? Win 10 home?

Where is it 170$? Do you look at the official store? But what about amazon? Local resellers?

Do you already have a computer with win 10? (you could use that licence, even OEM licences are transferable)

I only see your reply if you @ me.

you should be able to get a cheaper, keys for windows, just search online for oem keys.

Pretty sure me saying this is allowed on the forum since these are still genuine windows keys.

*Some* distros cost, but the vast majority of them are 100% free. I use Ubuntu 14.04LTS and 16.06LTS and it's totally free, no charge, enjoy, have a nice day.

NO sh*T.  What does the LTS stand for ?  I thought even Unbuntu was with money... wtf.... and what not.  Anyhow once he goes to Linux hes going to have issues.  He cant use apps and he cant game.  What is the point of Linux.  It is meant to be a server not a workstation imo.

They just cost you your time due to having to learn the new environment and if you want to game...good luck getting your entire library to work without some major work xD

LTS = Long Term Support. Means the distro is supported for 5 years

Steam is native under Linux and there are *tons* of games that run under it just fine. Then there is Steam Play (IIRC that's what it's called) that allows Windows-only games to run under Steam Linux.

Most distributions of Ubuntu are free, I've never came across a Linux distro that cost money though.

As stated by many others, some Linux distros do cost to use, however, the majority of them are 'free'. What you might be getting confused with is an optional donation that most Linux distro Developers will add to their download page. These 'free' distros have to be maintained and supported somehow as they are open source, without some sort of funding they would quickly die off. I often try to donate and support with whatever I can that is Linux based.

A lot of those are from people that stole money and bought keys with it to resell them. Watch the techquickie vid.

A lot of those keys are much cheaper overseas and are for versions of windows meant to be used in that specific country/region which will actually lock out certain features, to say, a resident of the US.

Not to sound to callous but since text is all we have....I don't really care how they acquire their licenses.  Whether they are a legit Microsoft provider selling them illegally over Ebay like they are (this is the most likely case imho) or they "found" them one way or another.  For this situation I absolutely don't care how or why.  As long as they have enough reviews to let me know that they are a legit key seller, that's good enough for me!

Don't buy from Microsoft, buy from Newegg or Amazon or some other store.

Win 10 Pro is 150$ USD right now on newegg. (Home OEM is 109$)

Or get it cheaply on a grey market website.

most of the majors versions want you to make a donation, but you dont have to.  if you want it on a CD or thumbdrive you are going to pay for that medium but the OS is actually free. (i prefer linux mint my self.)

I would pay a Linux distro but just for getting bugs fixed instead of a nosense expense like windows tbh

The major paid-for Linux distro I can think of is RHEL (Red Hat Enterprise Linux) and they charge a pretty hefty annual fee to use it. In return you get your business needs catered to however, and I think it's pretty commonly used in industrial situations (I think amazon lockers use it).

There's also Zorin, which comes in free and paid-for versions. Don't know much about it though.

I would pay £40/50 (50/60$?) for a full support (and community suggestion, like the paying community can vote on new desired features for the next release) driven Ubuntu flavour. I don't know how RHEL handles product activation but I'd hope that a Linux distro would use a more relaxed method and not worry too much about piracy (since there is still a free version).
