Ryzen 5 2600 only boosting up to 3.7 GHz

Hey guys, I was doing some encoding the other day and noticed that my Ryzen 5 2600 was only boosting up to 3.7 GHz instead of the advertised 3.9 and was pinned at 100%. I'm currently running the stock wraith stealth cooler, and I'm wondering if that is all I can realistically expect as far as thermal headroom goes. Other possibly related specs: X470 Aorus Ultra Gaming, Corsair LPX Vengence 2400MHz. Thanks for any and all input.

faster ram since ryzen cpu's really like fast ram and the slowish ram could be slowing down due to that

ram holding you back, cooler might be preventing 3.9, or you could just set it in bios

It could be that the motherboqrd is giving the cpu more voltage than it needs on auto. Perhaps if you manually overclocked it with better voltages it would do better.

Personally speaking it's probably a power limit feature in the bios or some bad auto setting, why don't you do the usual youtube OC guide but targeting the actual 3.9 or maybe 4ghz clock instead? It'd ensure it to work properly.

 

Memory Frequency will hold back performance yes, but it has no effect on the CPU frequency, Infinity Fabric doesn't care the frequency of the CPU, it just does it's job, so power settings and or cooling if throttling are the more likely alternatives... worse case scenario? worse silicon ever.

Maybe 3.9GHz only when a single core is under heavy load? all-core turbo is usually lower

Heat would likely be your main issue. Some temp information would help. 

 

By changing from the stock cooler to the CoolerMaster Hyper 212 Turbo (http://www.coolermaster.com/cooling/cpu-air-cooler/hyper-212-led-turbo/), and applying some Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut, I was able to drop the temps 20c at idle and almost the same at full load. Running mine now at an all core OC of 4ghz. Could potentially go higher but the other system components are low end so haven't tried to push it more.

If 3.9GHz is the max clock it will be for single core.  You might find overclocking to be your best solution, however, I can't say how far you'll get on the stock cooler.

This is my first build so I'm gonna try the easiest option (to me) first. I'm probably gonna upgrade the cooler and see if I get anywhere with that. Thanks for all the replies guys!
