Good news: we have photos of an early prototype of the Sony PlayStation 5, which, according to the latest rumors, will be released only in 2020. Let me remind you that the current generation of the console has recently turned 5 years old.

Photo PS5 we received from an anonymous source. He confirmed that the appearance of the device may change. In any case, we cannot vouch for the authenticity of the sample itself, but the fact that it looks believable is a fact.

Rumors say that an eight-core Ryzen chip with Zen + architecture and a graphics processor with Vega architecture will be used as a processor for the PS5. Memory standard GDDR6.

The new console will allow you to play 4K with 60 frames per second. At the start of sales announced projects The Last of Us Part II, Death Stranding, Ghost of Tsushima and Red Dead Redemption 2.

Quote

if you pay attention to the menu of the loader, there the name is used in the classic style - "PS5".

The source who sent us the photos said that the PS5 prototype is now working only in bootloader mode, but it has an image of the firmware that it is trying to install.

QqRjhcIabxMq.jpeg

in regular mode it says ps4 , so don't know why that is an issue, most probably it's a wccf kinda source reporting.

Details separate people.

It feels too early for a working prototype this early in the game if the expected launch time frame is 2020. And it looks too much like a consumer product in looks to be a dev kit. Especially when you consider this was the PS4 Pro dev kit (from https://www.tweaktown.com/news/55313/ps4-pro-dev-kit-auctioned-800gb-encrypted-data/index.html?

This was the PS3 dev kit (from https://www.engadget.com/2006/08/21/final-playstation-3-dev-kit-has-arrived/)

And these were the dev kits for the 6th gen (from https://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/comments/8jn7of/development_kits_for_playstation_2_gamecube_xbox/)

That is cool to see, and a good point. They would not have finished hardware at this point, just dev kits. And dev kits don't look like that.

Also, it is way too early. The PS4 Pro just came out barely 2 years ago.

Honestly looks like a generic black box that someone photoshopped a playstation logo on to. Nothing to see here.

I love how 3 of them straight up look like desktops I could have bought in a store around that time.

Well, I don't know...

You could "emulate" early silicon with the hardware used in this for early "experiments" and evaluation:

https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2018-hands-on-with-subor-z-plus-ryzen-vega-chinese-console

With the Hardware of consoles before this generation, you might have been right because that was full custom jobs for the ICs. This time its just semi custom stuff as it is just a combination of existing technologies.

Also the early bird catches the worm, who is the first of the next generation usually dominates it, regardless of the Hardware. You see that especially with the PS2 vs. Gamecube, XBox and other stuff. The PS2 was really not great and had some issues, even for the consumer (=flickering textures for example in the silent calms in FF X or the sequel).

Though I'd more expect an 8 core Ryzen CPU with a new 36-64 "Core" Navi Chip...

Because I doubt that the GPU Performance will be under the PS4 PRO or Xbox one X. It has to be far better than the stuff we have right now...

Point stands on op's stuff though, its just not a current production stage console if its set to be released in 2020. You wouldnt see something like that with such a lack of ports.

I was going to point out a lack of ports, but they're there in the image. They're just hard to see.

Only with Ryzen 7 and VEGA 64, maybe 56 but not really.

I call BS.

Though i fully expect and wouldnt be surprised to hear the next gen consoles being even closer to PC's than current gen.

At some point in the next couple gens, console will be un-upgradable PC ....bassicaly just a laptop without a screen ...a PC without upgradability ..a apple MAC :P.

I really don't like calling consoles "PCs" just because they use similar hardware that you can find on PCs. On a system level, the PS4 is definitely not a PC, or at the very least, a PC compatible device. You cannot install a bog standard Linux that you can install on any other PC on PS4 because the PS4 lacks things that the Linux distro is expecting.

I mean otherwise I could claim this phone is a PC just because it uses an Intel Atom: https://www.anandtech.com/show/12592/intels-last-atom-in-smartphones-a-2018-benchmark

I could even argue a modern x86-64 system is not PC compatible, because of certain quirks that Intel no longer allows (like permanently gating the A20 line).

I kinda agree with that.

BUT: When the Console needs minutes to boot up, I kinda have to call it a bad PC with the worst of both worlds: Long boot times of the PC with the closedness of a Console.

One of THE Advantages is that you can use a console immediately and don't have to wait to load an Operating system...

If there are other arguments aside from using similar hardware, then those don't make sense to me either that people are calling consoles PCs now when:

  • The Sega Genesis technically had upgrades to expand its capabilities
  • You could upgrade the RAM on the N64
  • One could argue the GameBoy Color was really an upgrade to the original GameBoy. The GBC is basically the same system architecture as the GB.
  • You could buy what are technically upgrades for the Dreamcast, GCN, and PS2
  • The PS2 had an official flavor of Linux with a desktop environment

I mean, what makes the PC special that other systems are doing to make those a "PC" or PC like?

Open and upgradability, though mostly the openness -> can install whatever operating system you like and want.
