Reason why AMD Vega was so underwhelming and PS5 news

Hi guys,

So this just came in on my google feed, apparently AMD had set two-thirds of it's Vega team on building console dedicated graphics cards for playstation and xbox and that they are already working on navi based "NEXT-GEN" graphics. Maybe a reason why we didn't get the expected performance from vega unlike the semi-4k graphics we got on the xbox one x and ps4 correct me if i'm wrong. And maybe also the reason why radja was so mad of not having enough resources to make something better.

wan't to read more here is the article from pushqsuare: http://www.pushsquare.com/news/2018/06/report_amds_next-gen_graphics_tech_is_being_built_specifically_for_ps5

apparently the zen based info was right because of its power/performance ratio it is a perfect cpu for consoles but sources say these consoles will have a rumoured 2020 release.

I don't buy it, the problem with Vega is not AMD's ability (or lack thereof) to produce a larger die, but rather the efficiency scaling of the architecture itself. They most likely could make a monster Vega chip to rival or even beat the 1080ti, but the power consumption and heat output would make it impractical and unmarketable. Vega is good enough for competitive APUs and consoles and, if AMD knows they don't have the budget to fight nVidia head on, it makes perfect sense for them to dedicate fewer resources to the enthusiast desktop market until they stabilize.

Not to mention miners love their Vegas.

If it is new information for the majority of users then it should count as news. If you were isolated (extreme example) for a year, most things would be news to you even though the events are not new.

Vega is good, issue is it was plagued by terrible prices and availability from very release up till now.

It however explains the driver release state, the lack of certain features such as primitive shaders and so on. I'm pretty sure there was something more to be squeezed out of Vega on the software side that wasn't done to my surprise back then. This would make sense on why they didn't bother and moved on to the next big thing and stop working on gcn which they are stuck pushing performance crowns with.

Maybe so, but it's equally likely they didn't expect to sell a lot of cards to gamers. Can't blame them considering the market trend and that they did in fact have a weaker product for that specific crowd. Even with better software on launch I suspect the numbers wouldn't have been much different, or not sufficiently higher to give them a decisive lead over nVidia.

Sure, but in this case it was the right move for them to dedicate resources on post gcn hard I since any derivative wouldn't give them enough of a lead over Nvidia on the long run. Hence why that move is probable. They basically saw they couldn't that Nvidia without a huuuge investment, so they released something good, but not as powerful since they had it, and then dedicated the rest for what's afterwards.

That's what I'm saying, it's not that they couldn't focus on it more because of consoles or whatever, they simply chose not to commit to the pc gaming market.

Not to mention miners love their Vegas.

Also to add, the cost for amd would be unreasonable both because of HBM as well as die size. Amd's GPUs are a fair bit larger... The Vega die, for example, is around the same size as GP102 yet in games performs more like the close to 40% smaller GP104

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

Then the WAN show must be the history channel for you xD

You may have raised standards and by all means that may be an advantage but most people consider unknown information to be news hence the phrase "this is news to me".

I have not checked the the other thread, if it contains the same information as this one and this one offers nothing new then indeed it would not be news.
