For a normal desktop aswell?

 

Go ubuntu, fedora, mint, debian or what you like.

 

You can install the packages from kali or other distros, or just run those in a vm.

Kali is designed for that. But honestly you can use any distro you would like. MacOS too. Even windows now days has more support for tools

Honestly use a regular distro as your main OS and just carry live USBs for Kali and/or Parrot.

Kali is more meant to be a tool rather than a functional desktop for doing everyday stuff. Use what ever OS you are comfortable with and install the tools you need. You can run Kali as a VM if you really need to leverage alot of the packages it has and dont want to install them on your regular OS

DON'T install kali as a permanent desktop os. It's not intended for that. Use any debian or ubuntu based distro and install kali packages separately if you want that experience.

I don't disagree with @Dat Guy I'm just not as harsh about it. Systemd has been a disaster for Linux.

 

Pen testing isn't about the distro. Use whatever you want. (Mac OS even honestly.) If you want to be cool and leet just use whatever is on the latest episode of Mr. Robot. Stickers are also a good way to show off your raw skills. :P

like @jde3 said you dont want to limit yourself to learning to use tools for just one specific platform. Depending on how far you intend to take your pen testing adventure you may need to know how to use windows/linux/mac based tools depending on what system you are trying to break

I personally would recommend installing Arch or Gentoo as a main distro. Use something like Kali only in a VM or as a liveboot USB.

this is not true. you can pass a wifi adapter through to your VM and then it works as a native device. any other problems are most likely due to the VM getting its ip address through NAT from the host machine. You would need to change the network settings to bridge/share the host adapter, or just pass through one that the VM can claim as its own.
