• Intel has developed inconspicuous smart eyeglasses that they will seed to developers later this year.

• Called Vaunt,, the glasses look and feel just like regular glasses and do NOT have:

  • A camera

  • Any buttons

  • A screen

  • A microphone

  • A speaker

  • Or a capacitive touch area

    • “We really believe that it can’t have any social cost,” Vonshak insists again. “So if it’s weird, if you look geeky, if you’re tapping and fiddling — then we’ve lost.”

• Vaunt is simply a system for displaying a small heads-up style display in your peripheral vision.

  • It can show simple messages like directions or notifications.

• Works over Bluetooth with Android phone or iPhone like your smartwatch does, taking commands from an app on your phone.

• The display is projected into your eye by a laser that shines a red, monochrome image somewhere in the neighborhood of 400 x 150 pixels onto a holographic reflector on the glasses’ right lens. The image is then reflected into the back of your eyeball, directly onto the retina.

  • The laser is so low power that it doesn’t even need to be certified; it’s at the very bottom end of a class one laser.

• Because it’s directly shining on the back of your retina, the image

  • is always in focus.

  • works equally well on prescription glasses and non-prescription lenses.

  • Works indoors and outside

  • Is discrete: beyond a faint red shimmer on the lens itself at very specific angles, nobody could even tell there was a display there at all.

• The image is in the lower right of your visual field.

  • when you’re not glancing down in that direction, the display isn’t there.

    • “We have it about 15 degrees below your relaxed line of sight. …The beauty of this system is that if you choose not to look at it, it disappears. It is truly gone.”

• The electronics are located entirely up near the face of the frames so that the rest of the stems, and even the frame itself, can flex a little, just like any other regular pair of glasses.

  • Other smart glasses have batteries that are integrated into the entire stem, “so those become very rigid and do not deform to adjust to your head size,”

• All-custom hardware, including the silicon. It also has:

  • Bluetooth to communicate with your phone.

  • An app processor

  • an accelerometer and a compass so it can detect some basic head gestures and know what direction you’re looking.

  • The prototypes don’t have a microphone, but future models may have one so it can be used with an assistant like Alexa.

• They’re targeting at least 18 hours of battery life

• The goal is to offer ambient, contextual information when you need it.

• The source code for a core component of the iPhone’s operating system on GitHub

• This could:

  • Give hackers an easier time finding flaws and bugs that could allow them to crack or decrypt an iPhone.

  • eventually allow advanced programmers to emulate iOS on non Apple platforms.

  • make iPhone jailbreaks easier to achieve.

• The GitHub code is labeled “iBoot,” which is like the iPhone’s BIOS.

  • The first process that runs on your iPhone, it loads and verifies the kernel is properly signed by Apple and then executes

• The code says it’s for iOS 9, but portions of it are likely to still be used in iOS 11.

• Apple has taken particular care to keep iBoot secure and its code private;

  • bugs in the boot process are the most valuable ones if reported to Apple through its bounty program, which values them at a max payment of $200,000.

• A few hours after the publication of this story, Apple sent a DMCA legal notice demanding GitHub take down the iBoot code.

  • "The "iBoot" source code is proprietary and it includes Apple's copyright notice. It is not open-source."

• Vulnerabilities in previous versions of iBoot allowed jailbreakers and hackers to brute-force their way through the iPhone’s lock screen and decrypt a user’s data. But newer iPhones have a chip called the Secure Enclave Processor, which has hardened the security of the device.

• This source code first surfaced last year, posted by a Reddit user called “apple_internals” on the Jailbreak subreddit.

  • That post didn’t get much attention since the user was new and didn’t have enough Reddit karma;

  • Its new availability on GitHub means it’s likely circulating widely in the underground jailbreaking community and in iOS hacking circles.

• SpaceX has successfully launched their Falcon Heavy rocket on its maiden voyage- depositing CEO Elon Musk’s personal Tesla Roadster into space to orbit Mars for an eternity.

  • with a dummy in the driver’s seat wearing SpaceX’s new crew suit for its first astronaut missions,

  • and a data storage device with Isaac Asimov’s classic Foundation trilogy loaded up.

  • There’s also a plaque inscribed with all SpaceX employee names

• Two of the 3 boosters returned safely to Cape Canaveral Air Force Station for nearly simultaneous, side-by-side landings that Musk described as “epic” and one of the most exciting things he’s ever seen.

• The third missed the drone ship and crashed into the ocean at 300mph, damaging the drone ship with debris.

Office 2019 will only run on Windows 10

• An update by Microsoft on the 1st of February noted that Office 2019 will arrive in the 2nd half of 2018...and that it will run only on Windows 10

  • Microsoft says: “Software that is more than a decade old, and hasn’t benefited from this innovation, is difficult to secure and inherently less productive,”

  • “As the pace of change accelerates, it has become imperative to move our software to a more modern cadence.”

• It won’t be shipping with the older MSI installer—the apps will all use the Click-to-Run installer, which is commonly used by Office 365.

• They also announced that support for Office 2019 will be shorter than usual:

  • it will receive the usual 5 years of standard support, but extended support will be shortened from 5 years to 2 years.

  • Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2018 will receive 5 years of extended support

 

T-mobile sued after cryptocurrency theft (Like Linus)

• Even though he had a PIN attached to his T-Mobile account for all number porting requests, T-mobile allowed the account of Washington state’s Carlos Tapang to be ported to thieves on the phone.

• The thieves then cleared out Tapang’s cryptocurrency holdings, worth around $20,000 USD at the time (2.9 BTC)

• The suit alleges T-Mobile is at fault partly because the carrier said it would add a PIN code to Tapang’s account prior to the incident, but didn’t actually implement it.

  • Tapang also states that hackers are able to call T-Mobile’s customer support multiple times to gain access to customer accounts, until they’re able to get an agent on the line that would grant them access without requiring further identity verification.

  • work had already started on the brand new major-architecture before Raja Koduri left

• The next generation lineup for NVIDIA could be based not on Volta, but on the Ampere micro-architecture.

• Not only that, but if the rumor is to be believed then GP102 has already been transitioned to End of Life and will be replaced with the GA series soon.

• Two men who ran websites that told people how to use torrenting service ‘Popcorn Time’ were arrested in Denmark simply for pointing to the information.

  • Unlike the often confusing world of torrenting sites, Popcorn Time is so easy to use that Netflix describes it as one of its "biggest competitors."

• Neither man ran a website that hosted Popcorn Time. They simply told people about the torrent service.

• both are accused of distributing information on how to access illegal content online.

• Russian security officers have arrested several scientists working at a top-secret Russian nuclear warhead facility as they tried to use one of Russia's most powerful supercomputers to mine Bitcoin.

• The supercomputer was not supposed to be connected to the internet - to prevent intrusion - and once the scientists attempted to do so, the nuclear centre's security department was alerted and the scientists arrested.

• There have been reports of some other industrial facilities in Russia being used for crypto-mining, and one businessman reportedly bought two power stations for the activity.

• Akhan's CEO, promised that we'd see it in its first device by the end of 2017. Now they’re aiming for 2019

• The technology is being actively tested with as yet unidentified device-makers

• Akhan's partners are stress-testing the diamond glass' strength, trying to reduce glare, and making sure the surface transmits electrical signals well, so your finger can navigate the touchscreen without a glitch.

• From Jan 26 to Feb 24 the US Military is running exercises to practice against scenarios in which the GPS network is destroyed or crippled.

• A large amount of GPS interference will be broadcast over New Mexico during these exercises resulting in intermittent loss of service.

• The expected range will be about 232 miles in radius and increasing in distance based on height.

 

It’s Settled: Uber Agrees to Pay Waymo $245 Million Equity

Chrome to brand HTTP as “Not secure”

I looked at that monitor on the Samsung website and in the US it works out at GB£801 and in the UK on the Samsung site, linked to Amazon UK, it is GB£1,159, there are 2 used from £1,048.08.

The massive price hike for the UK really pisses me off, will the US version run in the UK?????
