Linus Helped Me To Build

Hello ladies and gents.

Wasn't sure where I should go for this but I thought General Discussion was as good a place as any. I just wanted to extend my thanks to LMG for their great content. I have always been a console gamer but dreamt of having my own gaming rig and getting in on PC gaming. I never thought I would have the skill to be able to build my own and having the displeasure of once owning an Alienware "gaming" laptop decided I never wanted to go down the pre-built path ever again. After watching Linus' videos for the past 6-8 months an opportunity arose to build my wife her first gaming rig and test my skills. After a bit of research (and I still think I may have gotten somethings wrong) I ended up with these parts:

Case- In Win 303 black
Motherboard- ASRock B250 Gaming K4
CPU- i5 7500
GPU- MSI GeForce GTX1060 OC 6gb
RAM- Kingston HyperX Fury (2x8gb)
SSD- Samsung 850 EVO 250GB
HDD- Seagate Barracuda 1TB
PSU- SilverStone Strider 500W
Cooling- Thermaltake Water 3.0 Riing RGB 240mm AIO & x5 Riing Plus 12 RGB fans

I was insanely jealous as I had finally built a gaming rig but not for my self but I had at least gotten some practice in for when I could build my own.

As luck would have it a couple of months later another opportunity arose for me to build my rig. I had been doing some more research on what I wanted for mine and eventually came up with this list and was able to get all the parts and build my machine.

Case- NZXT S340 White
Motherboard- Gigabyte GA-Z270X Designare
CPU- i7 7700k
GPU- Galax GeForce GTX1080Ti EXOC White
RAM- G.Skill TridentZ RGB (4x8GB)
SSD- Samsung 850 EVO 1TB
SSD- Intel 600P M.2 128GB
PSU- Corsair RM750i 
Cooling- Deepcool Gamer Storm Captain 240EX AIO & NZXT Aer RGB 120mm (x1) and 140mm (x1) fans

And a but load of Hue+ RGB... Im one of those people... sorry.

I'm sure if anyone reads this you will likely spot something I did wrong or did match properly and if so would love to hear what you think I did wrong so I know for the next time (there will be a next time)

Since building them Ive purchased a couple of Corsair Strafe keyboards and Corsair Void headsets for my wife and I plus some other goodies here and there. I'm pretty happy with how both of these builds have turned out. I was thinking of getting a 4k monitor mine but I have decided I will wait a couple of GPU generations. I dont want the framerate drop just for 4k resolution. So I am thinking of moving to a 1440 ultrawide in the meantime.

None of this would have happened with out Linus and his crew or you guys here in the forums (I have been doing a lot of reading here the last few months). I have fallen in love with PC building and can't wait for my next chance to be able to build one. Hopefully my 3 brothers decide to invest in some parts.

Anyway, just wanted to share a story with you lot and thank Linus for teaching me and showing me that building a PC isnt as hard as I originally thought it would be. I look forward to more content across all your media.

What can I say, I like me some shinies lol.

The speakers do their job. I was going to fork out for some good ones then realised "why bother when I have the 7.1 headset" and I nearly always am wearing it. So some cheap USB speakers were more than enough for me.

The ultrawide is coming. I burnt through my savings on this thing but I will have enough funds for a new screen soon.

Trust me it's well worth it (IMO).
I recently got a U3415W on sale on newegg, it's fantastic.

1. Water cooling with i5-7500.... At least it looks good

 

2. Silverstone Strider? They are either bad or mediocre, what is the exact model?

 

3. I guess you bought the NVMe drive as boot drive? Sadly NVMe and SATA SSD as boot drive perform more or less the same. Unless you have to move huge files around all the time, dont get NVMe drives. SATA SSDs are enough.

 

Is the NZXT case being hold up by a book underneath?

Love the build, all glass side panels with RGB is one of the things I am debating about upgrading my desktop. I am still not sure if I want to focus on silence with something like a Define R5 or just go all glass and RGB.

 

On a side note Alienware does make pretty solid laptops, and with laptops you don't get to build your own.

1- you're correct was more for looks than actual cooling performance. I considered a just a regular fan and heatsink but my wife liked the look of the radiator setup and there was no harm in doing it

 

2- Silverstone Strider Essential 500w ST50F-ESB

 

i can't remember reading bad reviews for this one. I hope I didn't go wrong here but so far there have been no issues. 

 

3- again you are correct. It's for a boot drive. I had read that there was no point to getting an NVMe over a SATA SSD but I had the money for one and wanted to give one a shot. I'm one of those idiots that likes to spend more on the latest greatest even when it's not that big of an upgrade over existing tech... personality flaw I guess. 

 

No no it's not being help up by a book. That's just where I have placed the box for my Windows 10 USB box, so I know where it is at all times just in case I ever need it in an emergency. 

 

Im planning on getting a set of drawers to go under neath the desk to place all that stuff in. 

 

Thanks for the feedback. I hope my choice of PSU for my wife's PC doesn't bite me in the arse.

I kind of wish I had waited an extra week for the S340 elite to be in stock so mine could have had the glass panels too. But I was slightly impatient and the S340 still looks sexy even with the plastic panel so Im not too fussed over it.

Tier 6 PSU... The higher the worse btw, so it's nearly as bad as it could ever get.

Tier 1-3s are the recommended ones. Tier 4s can work but probably wont last long. Tier 5 or above is [profanity]

Fair enough but what exactly makes it "Tier 6"?

I was going through my saved articles from when I was researching the parts and nothing in my list told me to avoid that particular PSU. Either I missed something then or Im missing something in that link.

Im trying to find more specific info so I can find out why it was put in a T6 spot and you are so against it.

If you have any links or reviews that you think would help me please point me in the right direction. If this PSU is (expletive deleted) I would like to know why and look for something to replace it with.

You shouldnt buy it because they are lower tier ones available at this price range (not those I give link to)
