Netflix streaming in 4K on PC?

I never know whether i should post in General Discussion or Off Topic...

 

Anyway, I was reading about how to watch Netflix shows in 4K on PC since it did not work for most people who tried to do so, I heard somewhere that do you would need a Kabylake processor to watch shows at that resolution. I created this post becuase i am still confused as to how this works and if the Kabylake thing is true. Maybe someone has an explanation?

You DO need a Kaby Lake CPU for 4K netflix. Fuck intel.

It involves bullshit DRM and the use of Microsoft Edge. It's not a real hardware issue, but an artificial one to force upgrades. I believe Nvidia cards are now able to do the job now, it's been awhile so I don't recall the exact details.

 

The other rig is an itx box with a 6700k and I found it insulting Kabylake was just a 6700k with worst thermals and 4K Netflix DRM.

 

If you want 4k Netflix, I'd skip the PC all together and either get a streaming box or an Xbox One X.

For anyone who wants 4K Netflix the cheapest (good quality) solution is probably an Amazon fireTV.

Well thanks for mostly clearing that up. It's really dissapointing that it's like this since it's only my laptop that has a 4K screen and my new build will only be 1080P so that's a bummer  . Oh well...

Mhmm, Probably not, i would never even use it since i actualy prefer to watch movies and shows from my desk. And as a gamer, I would rather put that money towards a higher refresh rate monitor.

They had to satisfy Hollywood so you need Microsoft Edge and a Kaby Lake iGPU or an Nvidia GPU to watch 4k content on Netflix on a PC.

Worth mentioning that you need Kaby Lake on an actual 200 series chipset, if you use Kaby Lake with a 100 series chipset BIOS updated it still locks you out.

I have an Nvidia GPU so that can't be the case unless you are referring to the newer cards.

HDCP 2.2 is such a pain... I have a 1080p projector and a Chromecast Ultra, yet I can't play 4K content down-sampled to 1080p because of encryption that serves no benefits to anyone whatsoever. 1080p Netflix and YouTube looks awful at a large screen size, so the increased resolution and bitrate would help so much. I'm going to try a converter, but I don't exactly have high hopes for it (nor should I have to get a converter in the first place).

 

On my PC, I have both a compatible CPU and GPU to play 4K content yet I can't because of the lack of HDCP 2.2 on my monitor. I accept that a hardware decoder for HEVC is necessary (after Wendell spoke about it on the WAN Show), but when will Hollywood learn that forcing a stupid encryption standard that hurts the consumers, not the pirates, is a pretty bad idea...
