Why I cannot upgrade.

But say I wanted to get an upgrade which would allow me to overclock, such as an i7 7700K.

Here's the cool part... You don't HAVE to upgrade.  As you said, it 'shreds' though most games.  So keep it till it does.  You can just upgrade the GPU as needed and keep that CPU.  It should easily give you at LEAST another two years of gaming life.  And by not spending NOW you'll have money LATER that you can use for a much better upgrade once such is available.

I have a 4930K now, it's four years old come December, guess what?  Not upgrading it.  Gonna give it a new GPU in November, it gets a new GPU every two years, but the 4930K is still great and it keeps chugging along games just fine with a sufficient GPU.  And when I DO upgrade, my upgrade will be a very nice step up rather than incremental.

Trading a 4790 for a 4790k honestly sounds to me an idiotic thing to do.

OP can keep it until Intel's 10nm processors arrive next year.

The 4790 is still a beast of a gaming CPU by today's standards. You don't need to overclock it and you don't need to upgrade, IMO.

I only *just* upgraded to a 4770K this past winter (late 2016) and I'll be keeping this for a very long time yet. It's nowhere near being stressed by anything I throw at it. Just keep what you have and enjoy. ;)

Why I cannot upgrade
My PC/CPU is 7 freaking years old, I would literally need to replace EVERYTHING at this point since I also wouldn't trust a new PC with this aging PSU, that would easily cost me over $2k Canadian rupees for something remotely "future proof", $3k if I include a good gaming monitor and peripherals to go with it. If we forget the fact I literally cannot find a single GPU that's currently In-Stock and isn't overpriced by third party sellers anyway, thus essentially preventing me from even upgrading to begin with.

A 2 years old PC is still perfectly fine today, CPUs ipc hasn't increased that much in the last 2 years.

Dude, HD 7970s were the bomb! I like really wouldn't be sad about owning that, especially when paired with 16gb of RAM and a good PSU like that. What's wrong with your PSU? Anyhow I do agree slightly with your being upset about the CPU side of things but keep looking on the bright side and just keep saving up :33

Thank you very much for your reply!

Go x58 if you can snipe a motherboard cheaper than what they normally sell for.. those things are expansive as fuck lol.

What GPU with it? And Core 2 Quads can actually match some i5s, so they're not that bad.

Maybe a 2 core i5 can be matched by a Q9000 series with an OC, otherwise.. not a chance in hell.

C2 to first gen i series is a good 20% IPC leap, then Nehalem to Sandy around 10%.

I wouldn't mind another for SLI should I get the funds ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

lel I never really understand still as to of why the 1070 tried to 'replace' it, as honestly, who cares about power consumption? xD

Oya! If I get the money, I'll go for a custom loop with SLI 980 Tis. Cheaper than a 1080 Ti, but you still get the bargain rights of an '80 Ti card. Also, you can pick them up used for reasonable prices and give them a new home. And they have a ton of CUDA cores, so yay for rendering! And they looks awesome. And if you have one with a metal backplate, just run the fans on low, start up Unigine Valley, and cook your eggs for breakfast. Good way to get the most out of your card.

I think I'm probably going to run this system into the ground, right until it gets to how a GTX 480 performs now days. I don't need to upgrade now and probably won't for a good while as you said with your CPU. Maybe SLI, but nothing like a full system swap for a good while.

Thank you very much for your reply! What GPU do you plan to get though? :oo

I was in the same scenario. Wanted a cheap upgrade, so wanted to put in a GPU. CPU would bottleneck that, so that would require new CPU.. Thus motherboard and memory too. At that point I was left with a case, PSU and at that point 5 year old HDD. So I wanted to put in an SSD as well. Basically I was left with a bad-ish case and an okay PSU.

Ended up saving some more and bought an entirely new PC couple weeks ago :D
