Quad Channel Memory Kit vs Dual Channel Memory Kit vs Dual/Quad Channel. Dual Channel RAM is becoming obsolete now?

No you just need 4 sticks. BTW quad channel won't work on Mini-ITX which you seem to be so obsessed with.

Hello,

I just bought a 16GB x2 = 32GB RAM, Geil EVO X 3000MHz built for Ryzen http://www.geil.com.tw/products/show/id/563

I haven't bought the GPU, Motherboard, and CPU for my new build.

While I am deciding to wait for VEGA 56 instead of buying GTX 1060/1070, I started to think that maybe I should wait and get a Threadripper. (Thought of buying B350 and Ryzen 1700)

And I started to browser for the Threadripper specs and it says that it needs a Quad Channel RAM. So I started to feel panic because I just bought a DUAL CHANNEL MEMORY!!

I started to feel regret why did I buy a technology that has or becoming obsolete for my NEW build?

I also started to look for Quad Channel memory, and I found that Corsair Vengeance with the same 16GB x2 spec, and roughly the same price.

What makes my feeling worse is that the Corsair Vengeance says Dual/Quad Channel, why didn't I just get this instead of Geil EVO X?

So my question is that, is it worth it to buy 32GB Dual Channel now, seeing that Threadripper will come out soon and make Dual Channel like tomorrow's tech?

Should I wait for VEGA and Threadripper in the first place and use quad channel memory?

Thank you!

But will Dual Channel and Quad Channel RAMs seem to have a roughly same price... Why would anyone still buy Dual Channel and Ryzen? Why not every new build just start to use Quad Channel?

Threadripper supports Dual channel and Quad channel memory, you can put one RAM stick in there and it will still run just fine. Also Dual channel is not going to become obelsete for a while, Intel released its first chipset that supported Quad channel in 2006 and Dual channel is still around and widely used today.

In short you have nothing to worry about, Also I belive you are confused about the corsair kit. Momory is not made to work with a certain number of channels. It doesnt work like that. For RAM to run in quad channel you must have 4 RAM sticks, so a 2x16bg kit can not run in quad channel unless you add 2 more RAM stick

Because you can't use quad channel in a Mini-ITX case. You need at least 4 DIMM slots. Also, to implement it into a chipset/platform is very expensive and doesn't give you much performance gains. Not worth it IMO

The RAM used in a dual channel or quad channel system will be the same as the channels are from the motherboard and CPU and has very little to do with the RAM.

Dual channel is far from obsolete as quad channel RAM only benefits in a few very specialised tasks.

a memory stick is a memory stick. There is no Dual channel stick or quad channel stick. It depends on the chipset.

Oh I see, I have been thinking that the channel is on the stick in my understanding. As it usually written on the RAM. So it has nothing to do with the RAM?

Just watch this friend @noobee

Thanks for the video. This video fixed my understanding. So the "Channel" is just a saying of how many numbers is on the motherboard. Nothing to do with the name. If I have 8 RAM stuck on to the motherboard (like in X399), it means octa channel?

nope ... the sticks are all the same - they just get sold as a bundle, that's all

if you buy the same single stick four times over you, can put all four onto a quad channel board and run it in quad channel mode just fine. same with dual channel kits.

No, X399 is quad channel but has 2 slots per channel to increase the maximum amount of RAM you can plug in.

I'm still a bit confused now.

Why does Dual / Quad Channel is written on the specification page of "VENGEANCE® RGB 32GB (2 x 16GB) DDR4 DRAM 3200MHz C16 Memory Kit (CMR32GX4M2C3200C16)"

This Memory kit is a 2X 16GB and not 4x 8GB, why does it say Dual / Quad Channel?59823829a3e9d_ScreenShot2017-08-03at5_35_40.thumb.png.16cd03757d5b6c1405d378ef100535de.png

But Quad Channel is not written anywhere on the Geil EVO X Dual Memory Kit page that I have. Are you sure I can use Quad Channel if I buy another 2x kit of this?
