Quad Channel Memory Kit vs Dual Channel Memory Kit vs Dual/Quad Channel. Dual Channel RAM is becoming obsolete now?

the 4 RAM sticks need to be all Dual/Quad Channel? How about my Evo X Dual Channel Memory kit, if I have 4 sticks, can I still do the same to get Quad Channel although it says Dual Channel Kit?

No you just need 4 sticks. BTW quad channel won't work on Mini-ITX which you seem to be so obsessed with.

But Quad Channel is not written anywhere on the Geil EVO X Dual Memory Kit page that I have. Are you sure I can use Quad Channel if I buy another 2x kit of this?

YES! I've already told you.

Likely listed there because that model RAM is sold in both dual and quad channel kits.

If you are not using Intels X79/X99/X299 platform or AMD's X399 platform, you do not have quad channel.

X79/X99/X299 and X399 are quad channel platforms and need four memory modules to operate optimally.

Z77/Z97/Z270 and A320/B350/X370 are dual channel platforms and need two memory modules to operate optimally.

Four memory slots on Z77/Z97/Z270 and A320/B350/X370 indicates dual channel with two banks per channel.  Four modules can be used on these platforms, but you get no direct performance increase from using more than two sticks in this case and can actually end up having to run the memory at a slower speed because of the increased electrical load.

You can use two dual channel kits in either X79/X99/X299 or X399 to get quad channel working properly as long as they are the same type and speed.

Oops, forgot to quote in order to push the notification.  Check out my post above yours.

X399 will likely not have a mATX or ITX board due to the sheer size of the CPU socket.  It hyooge.  X370 is likely as good as it will get for AMD in that space for now.

I think I will go with dual channel for now, and wait for VEGA.

That seems like a good idea for now.

I personally want to see how Vega Nano does.  It could be a killer for small form factor builds.

New news about new GPU keeps on coming out, but the actual product itself is not available yet... when is the good timing to buy a GPU?

Hello,

I just bought a 16GB x2 = 32GB RAM, Geil EVO X 3000MHz built for Ryzen http://www.geil.com.tw/products/show/id/563

I haven't bought the GPU, Motherboard, and CPU for my new build.

While I am deciding to wait for VEGA 56 instead of buying GTX 1060/1070, I started to think that maybe I should wait and get a Threadripper. (Thought of buying B350 and Ryzen 1700)

And I started to browser for the Threadripper specs and it says that it needs a Quad Channel RAM. So I started to feel panic because I just bought a DUAL CHANNEL MEMORY!!

I started to feel regret why did I buy a technology that has or becoming obsolete for my NEW build?

I also started to look for Quad Channel memory, and I found that Corsair Vengeance with the same 16GB x2 spec, and roughly the same price.

What makes my feeling worse is that the Corsair Vengeance says Dual/Quad Channel, why didn't I just get this instead of Geil EVO X?

So my question is that, is it worth it to buy 32GB Dual Channel now, seeing that Threadripper will come out soon and make Dual Channel like tomorrow's tech?

Should I wait for VEGA and Threadripper in the first place and use quad channel memory?

Thank you!

The ram itself has nothing to do with "memory channels", it's how many DIMM's you occupy on the board. The reason kits are sold as "dual channel" or "quad channel" kits, is because they were validated in a lab prior to their sale, to be compatible with one another to achieve identical clocks/timings for their XMP ratings. These kits typically come from the same manufacturing batch, and likely hit similar limitations when overclocking, which is why it's important to buy a kit in the first place.

You can still buy two dual channel kits to occupy a quad channel board, or a quad channel kit to occupy all 4 slots of a dual channel board. All kits have JEDEC SPD profiles on them, so it's highly unlikely you will run into incompatibility issues, so long as you still buy identical SKU's and have them all running at identical frequencies/timings in each channel.

Wait for Vega launch.  The GPU sector should settle down after that.

I honestly do not believe that Nvidia Volta is going to be much more than a Pascal (GTX 1060/1070/1080/1080ti) refresh

What does Nvidia's stance on Linux (and open source in general) have to do with them not being good? If people have absolutely no intention to use Nvidia on Linux based systems, they wouldn't be impacted in any way.

Yep, unless you want to get a cheap GPU to hold you over and to have a backup in case you need it later.

Cant really recommend buying anything above RX 560 or GTX 1050 Ti right now anyway.  GPU prices are way too high compared to their actual value.  Stupid miners eating up all the GPUs. >:(
