Source 1: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-06-16/amazon-to-acquire-whole-foods-in-13-7-billion-bet-on-groceries

Source 2: https://www.nytimes.com/2017/06/16/business/dealbook/amazon-whole-foods.html?_r=0

  • Amazon.com Inc. will acquire Whole Foods Market Inc. for $13.7 billion, catapulting the e-commerce giant into hundreds of physical stores and fulfilling a long-held goal of selling more groceries.

  • Amazon gets a network of stores where it can implement decades’ worth of experiments in how people pick, pay for and get groceries delivered.

  • The deal sent shockwaves across both the online and brick-and-mortar industries.

  • Grocery chains plunged on Friday --

    • Wal-Mart Stores Inc. fell  7.1%

    • Kroger Co. fell 17%

“I assume the physical presence gives them the ability to distribute other products more locally. So theoretically you could get 5-minute delivery.” - Michael Pachter, an analyst at Wedbush Securities Inc.

  • Will Whole Foods eventually be checkout-less, using Amazon Go technology?

  • Will it get cheaper to shop at WF?

CRTC (Canada) bans cell phones unlocking fees

Source 1: posted by wkdpaul https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/793733-crtc-canada-bans-cellhpones-unlocking-fees/

Source 2: http://www.cbc.ca/news/business/crtc-wireless-code-cellphone-1.4161711

  • As of Dec. 1, cell phone customers can ask their provider to unlock their phones free of charge, and all newly purchased mobile devices must be provided to customers unlocked.

  • Telecoms often order locked phones from manufacturers that are programmed to work only with their service. Then they charge a fee — typically $50 — to unlock the phone if a customer wants to switch providers.

"Now there's going to be so much more flexibility in being able to jump from plan to plan, from carrier to carrier. That will likely spark more competition."

  • Canadian telecoms made a total of $37.7 million last year by charging customers to unlock their cellphones — a 75%  jump in that source of revenue compared with 2014.

  • Telecoms warned that if they didn't charge an unlocking fee for the few customers who want it done, the cost would have to be passed on to everyone.

  • Parents: The commission also announced that only the account holder can consent to data overage and additional roaming charges in a family-shared cellphone plan.

    • Other plan members will only be able to give consent if the account holder grants them approval.

Facebook creating its own TV shows

Source 1: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-06-16/facebook-chases-tv-s-70-billion-stash-with-its-own-video-series

Source 2: https://www.ft.com/content/2047563c-4bd6-11e7-a3f4-c742b9791d43

  • Facebook is closing deals for its first batch of shows which will be available via a new video tab on Facebook that hasn’t been released.

  • By funding a slate of original programs, Facebook hopes to entice more production companies to upload premium video, which Facebook will then use to siphon advertising dollars away from television.

  • Facebook is funding two kinds of programs --

    • Hero Shows: expensive series from established TV producers that will take a few months to produce

    • Spotlight shows: cheaper videos from publishers like Vox and BuzzFeed

  • All shows will be episodic and designed to spur conversation among Facebook users.

  • Facebook executives have compared funding original videos to priming the pump at an oilfield, giving creators a financial incentive to upload more video, get a taste of the large audiences they can attract, and come back for more.

  • Facebook has paid celebrities to use its live video feature, and encouraged TV networks and movie studios to stream live events and trailers on the social network for free promotion.

iPad Pro outperforms MacBook Pro in some CPU & GPU Ttasks

Source 1:  posted by hey_yo_ https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/793915-benchmark-tests-show-new-ipad-pro-models-outperform-macbook-pro-in-some-cpu-gpu-tasks/

Source 2: https://9to5mac.com/2017/06/14/ipad-pro-versus-macbook-pro-speed-tests/

  • The blog BareFeats stacked the 2017 and 2016 MacBook Pro with Touch Bar models up against four different iPad Pro models and  put the devices through a series of GeekBench and GFXBench tests, looking at both CPU and GPU performance.

  • On the Geekbench metal GPU tests the 10.5-inch iPad Pro beat out all other devices, including the MacBook Pro.

    • The newest 12.9-inch model came in second,

    • followed by the 2016 MacBook Pro.

    • The 2017 MacBook Pro placed fourth, behind its predecessor.

  • On the GFXBench graphics test the tests iPad Pro 12.9-inch and 10.5-inch models edged out both MacBook Pro models.

  • For multi-core CPU performance, the 2017 MacBook Pro came in at the top, but in second place was the 10.5-inch iPad Pro followed by the 2017 12.9-inch model- head of the 2016 MacBook Pro

  • Couple Caveats:

    • benchmark tests are not necessarily conducive to real-world usage.

    • MacBook Pro models have larger and higher resolution displays than the iPad Pro’s, which play a role especially in GPU tests.

    • iOS software is nearly perfectly optimized for the devices it runs on, whereas there is a bit more room for error when it comes to macOS.

  • It’s rumoured that the upcoming consumer GeForce cards based on Volta will not use HBM2

  • Because HBM2 memory may simply be too expensive for consumer products.

  • The challenges associated with HBM2 fabrication and implementation could also be related to the delays we’re seeing from AMD’s consumer Radeon RX Vega cards.

  • She was trapped with only two bananas and two bottles of water, unable to move or grab her cell phone.

  • Her family grew worried after she failed to show up for a visit, but their only clue as to her whereabouts was a ping from a cell phone tower that covers several miles along Route 12, about two hours outside Seattle.

  • But she “never gave up hope" and honked the horn of the car for two days until the battery died.

  • After searching countless logging roads, Bob noticed something amiss

  • Facebook is also working to bring these technologies to its other platforms, including WhatsApp and Instagram.

  • Facebook is currently focusing on ISIS, Al Qaeda, and their affiliates, though it plans to expand these efforts to block other terrorist organization in the future.

  • DARPA is spending $80 million to fund the development of the world's first ‘graph analytic processor’.

  • The HIVE (Hierarchical Identify Verify Exploit) accesses random, 8-byte data points from the system's global memory, crunching each of those points individually

  • That's a much faster approach for handling large data, which frequently involves many relationships between info sets.

  • It's also extremely scalable, so you can use as many HIVE chips as you need to accomplish your goals.

  • The agency is working with Intel, Qualcomm and Northrop Grumman, as well as researchers at Georgia Tech and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.
