Depends on the user. For me it is way too small, but I know people who use 42 inch 1080p displays just fine, so it's really a personal preference thing. What hardware do you have?

Main System: Phobos

AMD Ryzen 7 2700 (8C/16T), ASRock B450 Steel Legend, 16GB G.SKILL Aegis DDR4 3000MHz, AMD Radeon RX 570 4GB (XFX), 960GB Crucial M500, 2TB Seagate BarraCuda, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations/macOS Catalina

Secondary System: York

Intel Core i7-2600 (4C/8T), ASUS P8Z68-V/GEN3, 16GB GEIL Enhance Corsa DDR3 1600MHz, Zotac GeForce GTX 550 Ti 1GB, 240GB ADATA Ultimate SU650, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations

Older File Server: Yet to be named

Intel Pentium 4 HT (1C/2T), Intel D865GBF, 3GB DDR 400MHz, ATI Radeon HD 4650 1GB (HIS), 80GB WD Caviar, 320GB Hitachi Deskstar, Windows XP Pro SP3, Windows Server 2003 R2

Depends on how far you will sit away from it. If you're gonna sit 2 centimeter from it, yeah it's low res. If you're sitting a normal distance from it (lets say 50 cm) it will be alright. Of course it won't be super dense, but it will be alright.

I sit roughly 2ft from my monitor, I just want to know if it will make my games look bad?

I sit around 2 and a half feet from my 27" 1080p and I think it's fine. Of course 1440p looks better if I go from one to another but it's fine.

I had a 27" 1080p monitor and I gave it to my dad after two weeks of use. Couldn't stand it. Way too blurry, I'd say 24" is the max I'd go for 1080p.

Bought a 27" 1080p for a family in 2010, I Iook at it today and it's horribly pixalated, the desktop looks like it needs AA. Would not recommend buying this in 2017.

A 1080p 27" monitor sitting less than 2ft away is fine, but I wouldn't want to go any bigger without stepping up to 1440p personally. I upgraded one of my dual 23.8" 1080p monitors to a 27" 1440p display and love it because 1440p at 27" provides enough screen space to have 2 websites or documents up side by side for comparison, and works beautifully with Windows 7/10 window snapping.

Should be okay, but it really depends on the person. Can you check out the no Igor in a store to get an idea of how it looks? That will just be the best.

I would say don't do it. General rule of thumb for me is:

24 monitor - 1080p

27 monitor - 1440p

You can of course change the pixel density of any monitor via super sampling, AA etc but that depends on how deep you want to go into it and your systems ability to do this.

Personally I would say 27 1440p is the sweet spot for most things.

I personally think so, yes.  At a normal monitor viewing distance a 27" 1080p will look a bit blocky.  However, if you play games what is more important is that you get something with at least 120hz and ULMB.  The smooth motion, the lack of motion blur, the positional accuracy and overall experience is more important than the resolution.  If you can afford a 1440p gaming monitor with 120hz+ and ULMB then you should absolutely upgrade though...

That's not universally true. I'd rather game at 60hz on an IPS panel than 120hz TN, and I play plenty of FPS games.

Then you either don't play online games or you don't understand the difference that high refresh rate + ULMB makes.  ULMB alone is worth more than 4k.  Besides, games don't use native 4k textures and won't for at least 7+ years.  So all you're doing by using 60hz is adding delay, poor positional accuracy, motion blur, and likely a fair amount of input lag since people tend to buy slow IPS monitors that do a lot of post-processing on images.

The sweet spot is 1440p 120hz + ULMB.  4K is stupid for gaming and 1080p is dated but fine as long as you use ULMB to remove frame persistence and motion blur and add in high refresh rate for the feel/accuracy.

I have both a 60hz IPS monitor and a 144hz TN monitor and I play CSGO in addition to plenty of other first person shooters. I fully understand the benefits of a high refresh rate, but I'd much rather have the better color accuracy of IPS and/or the higher texture quality of 4k (and there are plenty of games that look better at 4k).

I wouldn't.  My last monitor was an overclocked Korean IPS, 1440p 110hz with no frame skipping/artifacts, glossy screen calibrated with excellent color and clarity.  It also had an 8ms response time, some input lag, and slight motion blur.  I now game on a PG279Q, same resolution, 120hz, except it has a matte screen and the color/clarity is nowhere near as good.  However, it also has a fast response time, zero input lag and I use ULMB which means no motion blur.

The difference is night and day despite the fact the picture quality is substantially better on the glossy monitor, and even if it was 4K I still wouldn't prefer it.  Input lag, motion blur and poor positional accuracy that impacts registration and overall feel is cancer for gaming.  If you play CSGO then I don't know how you can possibly say that you'd rather upscale your games to 4K and deal with all that crap than have a lower resolution that feels better and isn't a blurry mess with crappy registration and response.
