That's a bit different here. Before we kinda didn't really have the need to reuse things because we had a progress in how much we wanted to send and everything and he came up with that idea at the moment where it became useful to do it.

For terrestrial transportation, we have really solid implementation right now, which aren't easily beat. If you want something like he wants to do, you need something either on rails without air to reduce friction, but you still have the issue of power supply which is currently blocked on train. High speed train can achieve up to more than 500km/h but are blocked by the electrical phenomenon and not friction. Friction can help them go above the cruise 350km/h, but it becomes too expensive to run afterwards, on an energy basis.

So he need another power supply than already existing trains. He could have a fuel, but it's basically like a plane, but with extra maintenance costs, so it's not necessarily viable. If he uses batteries, he need strong ones, like really strong ones. He would need more than 100 times more horsepower to push the wagons than for his best cars which is not a given. In terms of power delivery and power capacity.

You'll have to add the mechanical constraints and the maintenance of the line. That amounts to more difficulties.

Economics wise it wouldn't be viable I think because of all that. Physical constraints may render it not feasible anyway, I haven't checked the physics myself, but I do think there is a reason no one has done it before, and it's for either physical reasons or economics.

Just think about it, he's talking about holding a full vacuum across tens of thousands of meters of tubing that's split into smaller pieces. Its just not possible with current technology.

It's actually possible to do so, but it is really expensive to do so.

(They did it in Virgo and Ligo to detect gravitational waves if I remember right, but their tube section wasn't as big and it was costly as hell but they did it because they could afford it in name of science, which musk won't be able to do if it's too costly)

Well his boring company is not disruptive (yet).  Paypal, Tesla, SpaceX have all been incredibly disruptive.  Musk is incredibly smart so depending how much time he invests in this new venture it could also be very disruptive.  And yes, man has been digging tunnels for a long time but that does not mean there aren't a million ways to do it better that we have no thought of yet.  A brilliant mind can push the limits for the rest of us to follow.  Musk's new venture is actually closely related to my own profession, so I am watching this eagerly.

For terrestrial transportation, we have really solid implementation right now, which aren't easily beat. In terms of power delivery and power capacity.

You'll have to add the mechanical constraints and the maintenance of the line. That amounts to more difficulties.

Economics wise it wouldn't be viable I think because of all that. Physical constraints may render it not feasible anyway, I haven't checked the physics myself, but I do think there is a reason no one has done it before, and it's for either physical reasons or economics.

I'm getting the sense that you are just making shit up because you have some bad feelings towards him.  A man who can become top in his industry is necessarily extremely intelligent.  A man who can become top in several industries is a genius with a combination of skills that are one in a BILLION.  What are your qualifications to say he's not that smart?  To criticize someone who achieves greatness, you must also have achieved greatness otherwise we will just think you are a fool.  Let me guess, you also think communism is great and rich business owners are somehow stealing from you?

With the work his companies are doing on electric vehicles, I would not be too surprised if within 10-years he is building an underground Tesla road system for large cities...  He could easily construct these with the tunnel borers and the systems inside could be setup for using his autonomous electric vehicles so that basically you drive your Tesla to one of his tunnel entries and then the car takes over until you exit near your destination.

You are correct, he does base a lot of things on false premise.  One can't be right about everything.  I personally think his reliance on government subsidy for electric cars is stupid, and sometimes he says things that are questionable.  His missteps are negligible in the grand scheme.

For a guy who knew nothing about rocket science to one day pick up some books on the topic and basically become a rocket engineer over the space of a few months is pretty amazing.  Then to found a rocket company and successfully launch and land multiple missions, secure contracts for various launches, and design the Mars architecture and you don't think he's a leader in his field??? Do you have any concept how complex sending rockets to space is?  It requires an incredible level of competence in multiple areas such as technical, business, regulatory/legal, logistics, etc.  And yes he is a magnet to other high functioning people which means his organizations succeed not by his own ability alone, but by the combination of competent people around him.

I think you misunderstood a little, what he's saying is the solar panels running the length of the tubing might actually generate more electricity than the system needs to run. Its like when you have solar panels on your house and you generate enough power that you can send some back to the grid and actually get paid by them.

Do you have any concept how complex sending rockets to space is?  It requires an incredible level of competence in multiple areas such as technical, business, regulatory/legal, logistics, etc.  And yes he is a magnet to other high functioning people which means his organizations succeed not by his own ability alone, but by the combination of competent people around him.

He's a forward thinker that's for sure. He has ideas that work in theory but sometimes transferring theory into reality isn't possible.

well this is a pretty cool concept but i doubt its going to become a thing

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

I would say the whole machine is 'ground breaking' as a pun xD.  As for the machines themselves, yes tunnel boring machines themselves have been around for a while, however his potential implementation of the technology may actually be the thing with the biggest effect.  What The Boring Company provides Musk is basically a way to have companies that produce vehicles and produce infrastructure for those vehicles to operate on.  There is a video update that shows what the long term implementation of having these Boring Machines may provide.

Or I'm just not tagging everyone a genius when they aren't. Henri Poincaré, Gauss, Euler, Galois, Fermat, Pascal, Einstein, Planck or Boltzmann were geniuses for instance, and that guy is miles away from them.

I don't deny he is smarter than most people,  but that is that contrast only which make people believe he is a genius, when real geniuses can be compared to other geniuses of history.

What can you seriously give me as an argument to support he is as brilliant as the people aforementioned ?
