Asus Maximus IX Extreme

Asus Maximus IX Extreme is finally on sale. Price is not cheap at $600+, it's the best you can get, for those that's planning to do some extreme water cooling setup. One of the unique features is the bundle monoblock by Bitspower, where it cools the CPU and surrounding VRMs. It's cassette like design, with 2 port holes, with sensors that can trigger a shutdown when it detects a leak. Also built into the monoblock is a flow meter, and no more spending hours on the internet, flipping coins, bending cpu pins, when having a dilemma on which color coolant you want, cause that thing also does RGB.  Rest of the specs are listed

  • Socket 1151 for Intel 6th and 7th gen processors
  • 64GB max DDR4 non-ECC unbuffered DDR4 up to 4133MHz(oc)
  • 3x physical PCIe x16 and 1x physical PCIe x4. Note that when PCIe x4 is running at full mode, one of the M.2 and 4 of the SATA ports will not work
  • Supports 2-way Nvidia SLI at x8/x8 or 3-way AMD CFX at x8/x8/x4
  • 8x SATA 6Gb/s and 2x M.2 PCIe 3.0 x4, supports both PCIe and SATA
  • USB 3.0 and 3.1 internal headers
  • 6x USB 3.0, 2x USB 3.1 type A and type C with Thunderbolt 3, Intel gigabit lan, Wifi+Bluetooth, LED illuminated audio jacks+S/PDIF out, video connector outputs, Clear CMOS and USB Bios Flash back buttons
  • Dual Bios with LED indicator and bios switch button
  • DIMM bank indicator LEDs with Jumpers to disable faulty ram banks
  • Quick diagnostic LEDs for CPU, GPU, Memory, and Boot Drive
  • Onboard Start / Reset, MemOK!, Retry, Safeboot, buttons, QLED Debug Code
  • Slow mode for LN2 and Asus Authorized technicians only RSVD toggle switch
  • 2x 4pin chassis, 2x 4pin water pump, 8x 4pin Radiator,  2x water cooling thermal sensor for both IN and OUT, 1x flow rate sensor
  • Asus monoblock by Bitspower with installation materials
  • M.2 heatsink
  • 3D Print mounts
  • Asus Aura RGB
  • 3 years warranty for motherboard from Asus, 1 year warranty + 3 year pay maintenance service for monoblock from Bitspower

Meh. Outside of the nifty leak detection, this looks like yet another pricey board with little worthwhile.

Well, I would be impressed if it weren't for the price. Also, Asus loses all their build quality points to their terrible customer service, QA, and warranty policy bologna. I'll stick to another vendor until I see proof of that changing drastically.

The lack of a PLX chip at this price point makes it complete dog shit of a design.  It's a $250 motherboard with a $100 monoblock that they're charging $600 for.  Buy a Gigabyte Gaming 9, a CPU waterblock, and you'll get way more for the same $600.

Workstation:  13700k @ 5.5Ghz || Gigabyte Z790 Ultra || MSI Gaming Trio 4090 Shunt || TeamGroup DDR5-7800 @ 7000 || Corsair AX1500i@240V || whole-house loop.

Why does the southbridge/chipset heatsink have that one piece jutting off? Is there some random chip between the pcie slots that needs a heatsink?

It's for one of the M.2. The other one is under the heatsink below the monoblock

what proof do you have of them being shit that couldn't be refuted with anecdotal experiences of them being good? with things like brand name its always way harder to loose an image than it is to get one, and especially with the internet i often get the feeling that people parrot each other. for example thinking WD drives are better than seagate drives (no the blackblaze statistics are not valid). im honestly interested, not trying to be downlooking (don't know the word in English)

At this $600 price point, I'd expect at least

  • 2 or 4 CPU sockets,
  • 8 DIMMs per socket,
  • 7 PCI-E x16 slots (is that what PLX is for?),
  • 3 M.2 NVMe/SATA slots,
  • 20 SATA & SAS ports,
  • 4 U.2 ports, etc.

Bonus points for a long-life & wide-compatibility CPU socket -

  • can upgrade CPU as long as a Seasonic Prime bought simultaneously is under warranty (or, however long the total lifespan of 4-pin Molex standard is),
  • has the same rate of price/performance boost over time on CPU upgrades seen in the 1980s to mid 1990s,
  • has upgrade path from $30 basic APU through enthusiast CPU all the way to $9K server CPU, etc. :)

It is anecdotal, however just look at their product reviews (especially on the pg279q) to see that it isn't just me who returned 4 monitors and 3 graphics cards before getting a fully functional product. You could also try talking to their customer support if you want. Anyhow it's my opinion and I personally won't buy Asus products anymore for awhile. I didn't tell everyone else to do the same, but If you were to ask me I would advise against it because of my personal experience.

this motherboard at this price doesn't make much sense if it was x99/am4 maybe but who (not crazy/crazy rich) would spend 2 times more on the motherboard as they would on the cpu.

specially given that next gen processors wont be compatible.

It fit what I wanted. A motherboard with built in water cooling. I think it's fun to also put my 960pro 2tb drive under the same block. I like the look... I like the leak sensor, I like the 8x on board Rad fan headers, the flow / pump headers, etc.

Given that I'll be spending a bit more than 350$ on the CPU to get a binned (guaranteed 5.1Ghz clock) and pre-delidded 7700k (probably more like $450 ish), it's not '2 times more' than my CPU...

Is it a price effective buy? Nope, but who cares... as part of a 6-7000$ computer/desk build, it was less than 10% of the total :) I will also say that it's damn heavy lol, but that water block is just plain solid!
