What will make me happier (1080 SLI/1080 TI)

Azrael2k8

Hi,

so I am wondering about what card to get next. I want to be able to play at 4K with ultra settings. My current Palit GTX 1080 GameRock is ok but not perfect. Basicly I have two or maybe three options.

  1. Get a 1080 Ti once it is available at a resonable price.
  2. Get another Palit GTX 1080 for SLI with watercooling because there is no room between the cards to get air. (I would need to upgrad to a custom loop)
  3. Wait for Vega cards maybe in crossfire since I already got a FreeSync monitor at a good deal.

What do you guys think?

1080Ti is better.

it's a single card, so no SLI issues, and if Nvidia is to be believed, it's about 35% better than the 1080, which is just about the scaling you would get with SLI anyway.

I am going to run two 1080 tis in SLI.  I suggest you do the same, because it's going to be the best gaming experience you can buy for 4K ultra settings.

Ordinarily I'd say get the 1080 Ti, but since you already have a Freesync monitor, wait to see how Vega does.

New Build (The Compromise): CPU - i7 9700K @ 5.1Ghz Mobo - ASRock Z390 Taichi | RAM - 16GB G.SKILL TridentZ RGB 3200CL14 @ 3466 14-14-14-30 1T | GPU - ASUS Strix GTX 1080 TI | Cooler - Corsair h100i Pro | SSDs - 500 GB 960 EVO + 500 GB 850 EVO + 1TB MX300 | Case - Coolermaster H500 | PSUEVGA 850 P2 | Monitor - LG 32GK850G-B 144hz 1440p | OSWindows 10 Pro.

Peripherals - Corsair K70 Lux RGB | Corsair Scimitar RGB | Audio-technica ATH M50X + Antlion Modmic 5 |

CPU/GPU history: Athlon 6000+/HD4850 > i7 2600k/GTX 580, R9 390, R9 Fury > i7 7700K/R9 Fury, 1080TI > Ryzen 1700/1080TI > i7 9700K/1080TI.

Other tech: Surface Pro 4 (i5/128GB), Lenovo Ideapad Y510P w/ Kali, OnePlus 6T (8G/128G), PS4 Slim.

Depending on how urgent you want your upgrade.

1.  is most secure choice, would recommend if you want to be sure you get no bullshittery with software

2. crossfiring might screw you over

3. This is great stuff, but again, software might make it hard to work.

EDIT: switched the up oops.....

I already thought so however I had two 1070 before which felt better than the one 1080. But I know the SLI issues so currently I think the TI will be the best option.

That might be a dream but too expansive in the long run. Are the vega GPUs any alternative for the TI?

Vega's highest GPU is likely to slot in between the 1080 and 1080Ti.

Thanks, so basicly only thing is either vega will be good and go for that or I will go for the 1080 ti? basicly 2 cards will be more issues than performance?

Very often programs don't understand crossfiring, which will cause more trouble in trying to get that to work than just getting 1080 ti

Ok, so if that is true it wont be a satisfactory solution for my needs I guess

Is that related to crossfire only or also SLI? I know SLI has issues but does crossfire have the same?

I guess two of the vega top GPUs might be better of than one 1080 TI but what would be the price? PRobably the TI would be cheaper?

Ok, thanks for your help. I will do what Phentos said, wait for the vega GPU to come out because of my FreeSync Panel and take a look at the benchmarks since I doubt that they will be better than the TI.

Or maybe exchange my cheap second 1080p panel with a GSync one so I am able to play with gsync or FreeSync in the future.

1- depends on the card and luck

2- crossfire is fine, no problem

We don't really know yet-not much info has been released about Vega.

Wrong. There are no issues with SLI and 2 1080 curb stomp a Titan X(1080ti level performance).

If anyone asks you never saw me.

Well try that same benchmark in watch dogs 2. I guarantee you will not see that same scaling.

Watchdogs 2 at 5k 98% at least on both cards.

Heres a Titan X at 4k.

...so about equal?

i'd say it's worth it to get a single card just to be able to play non-sli supported games.

it really depends on what OP wants to play.

So, I'm usually playing anything from BF1, Far Cry, Rainbow Six Siege, Steep and watch dogs 2. I know that SLi can be difficult with some games but I might be ok as long as once card alone is able to give me a good quality as a fallback option in case SLI is troubled.

However I want to ask in case I did not get this right, assuming SLI is working good what would be the ranking of the options since you threw in the titan X

Is it like this?

  1. 1080 SLI
  2. Titan X
  3. 1080 Ti

Regardless of whether you think it's a good idea, there's no need to engage in hyperbole like this.

OP: I would wait to see what AMD does with Vega at this point, especially in view of the monitor you have. But if you can't wait, go for the 1080 Ti over SLI 1080's.

Okay, thanks. I guess I will have to think about it. However waiting should be a good idea since my 1080 is still fresh and the prices will fall I guess.

Ah child, SLi is far better now than what it was 10 years ago.

But sure, if that's what you think...

Just as I told everyone to wait for ZEN before buying a new CPU, Wait for Vega before getting a new GPU.

AMD looks to be on track for a year of market disruption and I can't wait to see the price drops/products that creates
