Using GTX 1080 Without all power connectors?

RadiatingLight
Go to solution Solved by GenericPNP,

All power connectors need to be plugged in. You can get a Molex to *8* pin here on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/Athena-Power-4-pin-PCI-Express-Cable-PCIE4628/dp/B0032MT0OU (edit)

The zotac GTX 1080 AMP has two 8-pin connectors. if a PSU only has a 8 and 6 pin, would that work? or do all power connectors need to be plugged in?

You should probably buy a better quality PSU.

You can also use a six-pin to eight-pin adapter.

If you can afford a GTX 1080 then you can afford a PSU with dual 8-pins, my friend.

Would that work? AFAIK you can only demand 75W from a 6-pin while you can demand 150W from an 8-pin. Sure, a GTX 1080 will likely never demand more than 225W but why do janky adaptation rather than get a quality unit when OP clearly can afford a beefy GPU?

Yeah but nothing really uses Moelex in this time other than fans so there would be a lot of Molex connectors to spare

Buy a new power supply instead of using any adapters
But don't you already have a 1070? Why are you upgrading to a 1080 from that?

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Really? But how will that deliver enough power?

(although it really doesn't need the 300 watts)

not buying for myself.

my uncle wants to play ghost recon on three 1080p monitors, so I recommended either a 1070 or 1080. he chose the 1080 because he didn't want to worry about performance.

The difference between a 6-pin and 8-pin PCIe power connector is two of the pins are ground. An extra one for power and one to drive a signal low to let the video card know it can draw extra power.

I'm also certain a lot of power supply manufacturers just run six wires and piggyback two grounds to the other two pins.

I know for certain that Corsair do, I made my own cable extensions up and wired them exactly the same as the Corsair ones
