Can you stack Vram in DX12?

Hey llt community,

I want to crossfire rx480s 4g. Would I be able to stack their Vram in dx12 to make it 8g?

Only if it's implemented by the game devs.

 

For the sake of simplicity (and not being reliant on lazy devs) get RX480 8G's or for the same price a single GTX1070.

No, crossfire and sli will never stack vram, both cards need to fill their vram equally in order to keep system stability as both need access to the same things in order to work together.

 

Now there are new multi gpu features thanks to dx12 yes but the support for it is very limited, moral of the story is, buy a single 8gb rx 480 or a gtx 1070 it will be a much better money management.

DirectX 12 does allow VRAM stacking, but only if the developers take advantage of it and implement it.

Knowing how a lot of game developers are slow to adopt some things, I don't think this would really be implemented much.

Well, we don't know as we have yet to see a proper DX12 game (with the exception of Ashes of the Singularity)

It is enough, but then again you will be in a very tight life span, if you really want the best 1080p experience the choices are the 1060 6gb or 480 8gb, otherwise you will see yourself decreasing graphical quality sooner than you´d like to.

I would insist that getting the cheapest 8gb rx480 is a better deal in longevity terms.

VRAM stacking is a feature of DX12, but it has to be implemented by the developer to do it. Considering that DX12 is still something new and developers haven't really gotten a grasp of it yet, chances are this won't be a feature making an appearance for at least several years.

 

However, I also suspect that few would even use it because of how notoriously difficult it is to ensure your resources are coherent. I'm sure NUMA systems in servers already give developers a headache.

I was thinking about getting the xfx rx480 8g rs which is only a bit more expensive. But is xfx a trustworthy company? Are will they faulty silicon to me?

If you can, get the RX 480 STRIX, it is the best RX 480 quality wise

XFX is by many considered the best brand when coming down to AMD cards, you will be fine with it. Are you looking at the reference cooler? I personally have nothing against it, though it does run a tad louder and performs somewhat worse at cooling the card... my brother´s friend has one though and it really is not such a huge deal... it works fine.

The RS is a custom cooler, only slightly worse than the GTR!
