Not on At&t, I'm on Verizon with an LG G3, and in the mountains by my house  i frequently lose even 3g service. The 2g(or 1x as it shows up) is the only thing allowing me to make calls up there.

Considering there are areas here in Germany where i only receive GPRS Signal...

We still have to pay very high prices for mobile Internet compared to the rest of europe and still have shitty connections. They screw us!

Seems a bit of a silly thing to do. 2G is important as a method of fall back in the event 4G and 3G goes down. Thats why the UK networks continue to support it, even GPRS is still regularly checked over.

First I have to congratulate the OP on such a dank post. The dankness is overwhelming. Well memed, sir.

2G has better reception, so it could be a bad move but if they implement 4G or 5G in the same spectrum they just freed up, then I don't see how the range wouldn't be the same as the old 2G and perhaps even improvements if they add better tolerance to signal drops through modern technology.

I still get occasional drops to 2G especially in tunnels but then again: I don't see the 2G network getting shut down within the next five years at least and probably won't unless the replacement has the same or better range and the majority of devices support the switch.

But but...what about those with their old Nokia bricks? Those things never die, and get reception where current phones go "fuck this shit". (For that matter, the batteries never seem to wear to the point of being useless eitehr).

Because modern phones have incredibly shit antennas. They almost get worse every year. Not sure why they do that but they have actually gotten worse. This has been tested by universities. Especially iPhones have some of the worst antennas on the market.

Source?

I didn't notice any drop when I switched from a basic phone to smartphone. And my service has gotten better over the years. My 5s got service where my droid X, HTC thunderbolt, and RAZR Maxx did not. And my 6s+ gets service where my dads 5s does not.

This is a test of modern phones. I can't find the source for the other thing but I do recall something about the good ol' Nokias getting better reception.

Edit: just for reference: the guy who wrote that paper is an expert on the subject. Apparently the first internal antenna ever made on a commercial phone was based on his final thesis over 20 years ago.

Dude the iPhone 7 literally does nothing new. This is just a planned obsolescence tactic.

Well the first gen iPhone has kinda been considered obsolete for the past what, at least 6 years or so?

2G/Edge is nearly useless, as in too slow for any practical use.

Edit: I saw other posts you made I knew you weren't serious but like I'm sure there's people out there that would agree.

As far as basic functionality wise, they aren't different.

Ummm...Yes they are.

Try installing apps like snapchat or instagram on the original iPhone.

Functionality depends on usability. If it's not usable, it's not functional.

Yup, I'm still getting 3 days out of my 3310's original battery.  That didn't stop me from putting a modern high capacity Li-Po affair in there though.  3 days of battery life is fun, 2+ weeks is better.

I dread the day they force me to update, this little phone is still doing everything I need a phone to do and is a hell of a lot more sturdy than anything they made since (including those "rugged" phones for the hipsters that want to look like adventurers).

Laying it on a bit thick, eh, Kloaked? :P

I love satirical or sarcastic topics like these, and it gets even funnier(if a bit tiresome) when a lot of people don't get it. Please do more like this if you can! xD

On a serious, on-topic note, anyone reasonable can see that this needs to happen at some point. There is a time at which technologies are practically useless and too costly to support with no one using them, so I'd say a move like this makes sense. The timing can be a point of contention at times, but it is what it is, I guess.

Why is the God of Hyperdeath SO...DARN...CUTE!?

Also, if anyone has their mind corrupted by an anthropomorphic black latex bat, please let me know. I would like to join you.
