Titan X (Pascal) Opinion Poll

I like to gauge the community's feelings about new products, mostly graphics cards. So here's a poll.

 

Personally, I have some pretty mixed feelings about it. I think the price is high, the name is stupid, and the RAM should've been increased, but I'm also excited by the performance numbers they're throwing around.

What do you guys think? I'd like to know more nuanced opinions (more than the poll shows) as well.

only thing about the name is that anyone who is going to be looking at that high end of a graphics card will know which edition it is and wont get confused by it so I personally don't see anything wrong with it but see were others are coming from

The problem is that they wanted people to know that the new Titan X isn't a gaming card (not branded as a gaming card).

its the 2016 GTX titan

a considerable amount faster than the 2016 GTX80

and a huge leap for current owners of the 2014 GTX titan.

 

if they're gonna pull this crap, they should go all the way and go for the way car models happen.

Titan Omega would've been great. It would be a little short-sited, but it's exactly the kind of epic-sounding name I expect.

Because the Top Nvidia Engineer made a bet with the Nvidia CEO to make an even better GPU.

That's still not an excuse to name a new product the same as the old one. That's just confusing as fuck. It doesn't go gtx 680, 780, 980, the new 980. Who does Nvidia think they are, Razer?

I'm content with my 1080 SLI. 

 

I've never bought a Titan because I see them more for professional use than swinging an epeen around saying I got 12 gigs of VRAM.

 

Titans are the step between consumer grade gpus and professional grade gpus. Some professionals will buy them for their deep learning use. Consumers will buy them to say I got 100k in this PC case.

That would be awesome, they could replace some of the metal on the cooler with acrylic and incorporate RGB LEDs if they really want to be considered a serious GPU manufacturer (in terms of competing with companies like EVGA).

Gaming cards have "Geforce" in the name. Thus this not a gaming card. But its not a Tesla or a quadro either.

They seem to care an awful lot about gaming for a non-gaming card. It may not have GeForce in the name, but it's listed under "GeForce" and they don't even hint at it being a professional card.

Yes, Titans aren't as much gaming cards as they are somewhere in-between, but Nvidia's been closing that up gradually.

Have they said whether it even has double-precision compute or not?

Almost every GPU has double precision. The question is how much they have.

 

on Kepler GK110 it was 1/3 SP performance.

 

on Maxwell 2 GM200 it was 1/32 SP performance.

 

on Pascal GP102 it will probably be 1/3 or 1/4 or 1/8 or it could be 1/32.

 

Most nvidia cards use 1/32 whilst most amd cards use 1/8 or 1/16

You know what I meant. If this is meant for deep learning it needs to be a good compute card, which has different priorities than gaming cards.

Actually quite the opposite.

 

Deep AI learning doesn't need good DP.

 

Machine AI learning needs decent FP16 performance (Half precision) and good INT8 performance.

It's my understanding that most deep learning applications are mixed-precision...

I'm going into machine learning, but currently I'm still going through my education and I haven't actually dove into the compute side of it yet. I'd appreciate if you could offer a good explanation :3

 

Either way, Nvidia obviously isn't pushing this card as a compute card. Am I missing some documents or something?

Yup this is my thought too. Probably couldn't get yields high enough and made the decision that's why it came out at a weird time.

This might be the only Titan that fails since it lacks HMB2. I thought it did... for 100% I thought it did... now I'm like $1200... GTFOOH.

 

It's just basically a super GTX 1080 - lots of RAM, more CUDA.... really unimpressed at the lack of HMB2. If it's not on the Titan... where and when is this HBM2 gonna hit? They were touting HBM2 along time ago....long time...ago...

I'm stoked. Taking a number so hopefully it's not a stampede. Already have a happy home for the Hybrid.
