$117,000 for Cable Internet

When Cole Marshall decided to buy an empty lot and build a house, one of his top priorities was getting fast and reliable Internet service.

Marshall says he received assurances from Charter, the local cable company, that he could get Internet access to his home in Wisconsin. There was also a promise of relatively fast DSL, with telco Frontier Communications telling him it could provide 24Mbps download speeds, he told Ars.

As it turned out, neither company could deliver. Once the house was built, Charter would only offer service if he paid $117,000 to cover the cost of extending its network to his new home. Frontier does provide DSL Internet, but only at slower speeds of up to 3Mbps downstream and 1Mbps upstream.

Frontier is satellite only why would he assume they do dsl?

Also this guy should actually request the installation first and just have a temporary shack on site and say "install it now I will pay for reinstallation once the house is built"

Actually is not that hard to try to install services before buying the house, much rather pay 500 bucks ETF than a full mortgage for a useless house.

Yeah I get 10 down .15 and that is the only speed I can get.

Actually is not that hard to try to install services before buying the house, much rather pay 500 bucks ETF than a full mortgage for a useless house.

Yeah I get 10 down .15 and that is the only speed I can get.

I run through charter, pay for 3/1 as that's the best package I can get along with dsl, and fiber never coming to my area.... The isp I run through is just a reseller btw, but 90% of the time I never come close to my rated speeds and everything is throttled horribly... Twitch loads 1% of the time...

I just visited my family in WV, Frontier does offer bonded aDSL. The "DSL" thing kinda threw me off, making me think it would be slow, but i had a great ping to every webpage i visited. Bandwidth wasn't exactly the greatest, but it got the job done.

Oh ok so they might have DSL on some areas but if they can't reach that they use the Echostar 17 Satellite operated by Hughes for satellite internet, gotcha.

ISPs are not obligated to build lines to wherever you please. ISPs do a lot of things wrong but this is not one of them.

As it turned out, neither company could deliver. Once the house was built, Charter would only offer service if he paid $117,000 to cover the cost of extending its network to his new home. Frontier does provide DSL Internet, but only at slower speeds of up to 3Mbps downstream and 1Mbps upstream.

For the love of god, someone needs to light a fire under the FCC's ass. They need to crack down HARD on these companies.

Personally, I'd like to see a bill rammed up congresses ass, requiring all DSL companies to build their networks out to ALL residential addresses in the US. Regardless of whether or not someone is living there. The entire price of which, should come out of the companies pockets. No subsidies, no tax benefits, nothing. Call it the price of being allowed to continue doing business in OUR country.

ISPs are not obligated to build lines to wherever you please. ISPs do a lot of things wrong but this is not one of them.

I think you missed the part where they said that they would be able to provide service to his house. Then rescinded that before they told him he would have to pay to have the cable laid in the first place.

You know what's easier than buying and building a brand new PC? Petty larceny!
If you're worried about getting caught, here's a trick: Only steal one part at a time. Plenty of people will call the cops because somebody stole their computer -- nobody calls the cops because they're "pretty sure the dirty-bathrobe guy from next door jacked my heat sink."

Some days I dip down to .5/.5... It pisses me off that my isp refuses to do anything about it.
