best antivirus as of today

I have been religiously using avast for quite a while now but I am not sure if there is a better one now, what do you guys think is best now?

and what are you using?

P.s. free antivirus is preferred

Well if you are going for free, I cannot reccomend AVG.

 

I have had bad experiences with it.

As your question is what is best, for me kaspersky pure 3.0

But then you said free, and newsflash, no free AV is perfect, and in fact, I've never gotten on well with any free AV.

Started using MalwareBytes. I am very pleased by it.

The best free anti-virus is very subjective, they are probably all good (apart from bloody McAfee and Norton).

 

I've used Avast for years and it has been good but I've heard good things from Microsoft Security Essentials and AVG but I've never used them so I can't really comment.

I've used Avast for over 2 years. Never had a virus. 

the only reason i dont use avast is because when i had it in the middle of a hardcore gaming session this would happen:

Couldn't agree more but a decent anti-virus compliments a good level of common sense :)

Then remember to enable gaming/silent mode or whatever it's called :P

Unless you don't play in fullscreen or disabled this setting, the No Notifications in Avast should enable automatically.

Pretty sure that's not an anti-virus.

 

Anyway, I use the free version of Avast, I don't see anything wrong with it, it has some nice features and it quite reliable. I recommend you go into settings and turn all the sounds off, though, they drive me crazy. Also I hear the $25 one time purchase of Malwarebytes Pro is quite nice, also its not an anti-virus so you can have it along with an anti-virus.

Comodo works pretty well. Get that plus internet security. Very good program.

Lets call it more like a program that targets malware in general. In fact, it's not really called an anti-virus by the developers. It's called anti-malware. However, Avast is anti-virus and you can install it in compatibility zone so it doesn't conflict with any other anti-virus programs.
