Power supply recommendation

nsuinteger

G’day all,

Have couple of questions with regards to a build i’m doing.

1) Using nzxt h210 case and going with sfx power supply unit. I was looking at corsair / silverstone and seasonic models and found that all of them have shorter cables and I will need to get extensions. I’m interested in doing aesthetics at a later stage when I have a stable system so don’t want to spend much on mods at start. Is there any modular psu  that comes with enough cable length?

2) For the wattage of my system here is a calculator i’ve used for a more realistic usecase for the components i’m using. https://outervision.com/b/i8uBS3

It says at 370W is the estimated. This is for non-oc. If I were to do bit of oc and may be change graphics to a more capable card in future (max at 2070 super level), would a 450-500W still be enough to maintain the system well?

Cheers,

Corsair recently recalled al of their SF series power supplies due to a critical design flaw - do not buy those.

Ryzen 3600 consumes up to around 80w. Give cpu a budget of 100 watts.

motherboard and ram consumes around 15-25 watts. you have 2-3 watts per stick included

gtx 2060 consumes around 150 watts if I remember correctly, maybe a bit more.  gtx 2070 is at around 200-250w

So you probably won't go over 300 watts in power consumption, on the 12v output of the power supply.

A 550w power supply will most likely output at least 500w on the 12v wires, so you're only loading the power supply to around 50-60% of its capabilities. You have plenty of reserves.

A 450w psu would also work, but with a gtx 2070 card you'll be at around 70-80% of the psu's maximum output, and that's still  fine, but i'd be concerned about noise levels, a lower wattage psu may have a cheaper noiser fan to blow out the heat produced by the psu.

They recalled all units produced between some dates, from one model ...dates were until march or so this year, and it's not a critical flaw.

A piece of insulator (like thermal pads between a heatsink and a component) was not manufactured right and failed to insulate after a while causing that component to blow up (electricity goes from component to heatsink which is grounded, causing a short circuit which makes the component blow up). Has to do with that insulator absorbing humidity from air, and being sensitive to squeezing/crushing (from that component being screwed to heatsink)... or something like that.

They recalled all models which contained a batch of that insulator. PSUs manufactured after a certain date are perfectly fine.

Imagine claiming a power supply "blowing up" is not critical...

You're calling a bad batch of one single component that leads to PSUs blowing up on primary side with completely no harm to PC components a 'critical design flaw' which it isn't. It's a failure of QC on the OEM side but not a critical flaw in the design itself. Corsair is replacing all batches which possibly include this bad component even when it isn't gonna end up in every PSU made in that period and even of those, not all would show signs of that failure because a second variable there is high humidity, that's why almost all reports of failed units were from Malaysia and Singapore. And if you'll end up buying a unit made in that period you'll get a replacement with no questions asked.

Critical would be "this power supply fails in such a way that it sends 350v .. 420v DC (rectified ad filtered 230v AC and filtered) to your components, blowing them up, stop using the psu right now, warning, risk of fire!! "

The component blows up, makes some smoke, and that's it, there's protections and all components on the low voltage side are fine and no harm happens to components.. fuse may blow

You could open the psu yourself, unscrew the heatsink, replace that insulator material, screw the heatsink back. If psu already died, replace that component (a diode or mosfet in to-220 / to-247 package, easy to solder, through hole stuff) and the fuse and it's as good as new.

It just takes some time because everything is densly packed inside the psu.

Why SFX, you can fit a larger ATX PSU in the H210.

Yes a quality 450W PSU is just fine, 550W would be good for some headroom though. My one ITX build is powered my a Corsair SF450 and has an R7 1700, 32GB of memory, 1 NVME drive, 1 Hybrid HDD, and a RX 580 8GB soon swapping to a GTX 1080 and I only draw like 325W MAX under load.

You can buy either Corsair RMi, RM (2019) or RMx cables and use them instead of the cables that come with the SF. They are completely compatible with one another since they use the same pin types, though you could just buy an ATX power supply since the h210 supports it. You can buy something like the Fractal Design Ion+ 560w Platinum for $110.

yes it can, but thought of doing so to give gpu a bit breathing space.

But the GPU is up against a shroud regardless. As long as you have two intake fans on the H210 you are fine.
