Nah probably not depending on where the leg work is being done. The reason they overheat is they are internally recording. That's why people use external recorders on DSLRs as you can bypass the cool down time for the sensors. So you can shoot forever instead of 14-19min at a time

Depends on the DSLR. Some brands never seem to have heat issues, others struggle with it. There are other reasons to use external recorders and that is often due to the formats available externally that are not available directly.

Guys I have canon 1200d it doesnt have power in connector, when I am out I need to recharge battery, also it has mini usb port so I am limited with broadband of usb 2.0 interference, still it works with eos software upper, since it isnt officially supported. Picture is far better than on my laptop

My Camera is so old it's not on the list ha.

 

Though in all seriousness, you risk damage to camera from heat and mechanical damage if the camera is used as a webcam extensively, and it seems silly to use a 4-figure DSLR as a webcam. If I had a 5D Mark IV I'd feel absolutely silly using it that way. I have the same opinion about using a smartphone as a webcam. You shouldn't be using a $1000+ device as a $99 webcam. Or in the case of the iPhone, a $250 webcam (since it can be used as a depth camera.)

 

But that is why most cameraphones are rubbish as webcam's (the lack of any mounting hardware not withstanding) is that they can only push an over-compressed video signal over WiFi and not high-bitrate video stream like they would if they were recording directly to their flash storage. A DSLR camera can record in basically 4K at DCI quality levels to begin with. So unless you really need a live recording, it's not really that useful. In which case loading the NDI Camera app on the iPhone is probably convenient enough and can be loaded directly into OBS or other NDI video systems.

I was using some software called "SparkoCam" that was pretty bulky and crashed from time to time.

Though in all seriousness, you risk damage to camera from heat and mechanical damage if the camera is used as a webcam extensively, and it seems silly to use a 4-figure DSLR as a webcam. If I had a 5D Mark IV I'd feel absolutely silly using it that way. I have the same opinion about using a smartphone as a webcam. You shouldn't be using a $1000+ device as a $99 webcam. Or in the case of the iPhone, a $250 webcam (since it can be used as a depth camera.)

 

But that is why most cameraphones are rubbish as webcam's (the lack of any mounting hardware not withstanding) is that they can only push an over-compressed video signal over WiFi and not high-bitrate video stream like they would if they were recording directly to their flash storage. A DSLR camera can record in basically 4K at DCI quality levels to begin with. So unless you really need a live recording, it's not really that useful. In which case loading the NDI Camera app on the iPhone is probably convenient enough and can be loaded directly into OBS or other NDI video systems.

 

Very little chance of damage to a camera if you use it as a webcam. For DSLR's they are pretty much running in live view when hooked up like this, and with mirrorless cameras, this is their default operation to show something on your EVF or back screen.

 

I've hooked up my EOS R as a webcam, and it works great. Image quality beats the snot out of any webcam, and it makes use of my existing camera gear.

If you leave a DSLR running in the way people use webcams (eg 2-8 hours per day, several days per week), you'll certainly wear out parts of the camera that were never meant to be on constant use this way. Smartphones and DSLR's get rather hot when used as webcams.

Most modern DSLR's are designed to be used as video cameras, and it's unlikely that the sensor will die due to use prior to the camera being significantly outdated, so it probably isn't a major concern unless you are planning on running it  24 hours a day, every day, for a long time, and maybe, you might see some degradation, but by then, the camera is well out of date and obsolete.
