The size/weight difference of the phone inside vs outside the case for me personally doesnt make much difference.

 

Like I said earlier im not wearing skinny jeans where my pockets have issues holding a few credit cards  lol. Phones are at the point where i dont care if they get smaller/thinner. They are already smaller then i need them to be. My note 9 could be double its thickness and it would still fit well in my hands and pocket.

Yeah but material wise I would much rather look at stainless steel and glass then $20 fake looking rubber leather from china

I don't really believe pricing, or the listings. For one, they're riddled with errors. For example, the Mediatek SoC doesn't come with an Adreno GPU.

They wouldn't price the base model, and the Pro so close together. They'd end up cannibalizing the lower tier products sales.

 

It's a shame if they do use the Mediatek SoC in the lower tier phone, I was hoping for a mid tier SnapDragon SoC.

Anyways, while some early OnePlus fans might be upset that they have the Snapdragon 865 only on the 8 Pro at an eyewatering price of $800, I can also understand where they're coming from. 8x5 chips are now pricey as hell, and even the executive at Poco said that the pricing of the 855 and 865 have skyrocketed, and now it's pretty much impossible to build a phone at a reasonable price with those chips.

 

What is interesting is the use of the MTK Dimensity 1000 in the OnePlus 8 Lite. This is kind of a double-edged sword, as one hand they will have a chip just as capable as an 855 at a fraction of the price, delivering a very pleasant experience for a sub-$500 phone, while on the either hand the questionable nature of modding on MediaTek chips might put some people who buy OnePlus phones for their competitive pricing and moddability away, which is a risky move for a company who was essentially born on those principles.

We'll see how it goes.

I can't help but laugh at people that complain about OnePlus raising their prices...OnePlus never set out to release break-even phones for the rest of the companies existence. They're basically following a drug dealer's philosophy; give them something cheap, get them hooked and loyal, and you can raise the price over time.

Sure, but most phone-companies out there suck ass. I really only look at Nokia and OnePlus phones nowadays, because everyone else either produces poor hardware, has a ton of bloatware and "features" on their phones, doesn't provide timely firmware-updates, their phones cost way too much, or a combination of those.

Yes because thats the mindset a niche phone company should have. Lets raise prices so that we are no longer the budget value we made a name off of. Lets not worry about finding new customers. We will just hope our fan base we got for being a high end budget brand will just fork over more money.

We never had wireless charging, so why add it now? Sure our phone now coat the same or more as phones that do have it...that doesnt matter.

 

You act as if oneplus has F You money and a diehard loyal fanbase that will keep them profitable forever. They dont.

 

If they are going to price themselves with other flagships they cant be taking away common features other flagships have.

A lot of the Chinese manufacturers are putting out solid devices, like the RealMe and some Xiaomi devices. They're getting better with their OS's as well, and if you throw something like NovaLauncher over top you hardly notice the oddities.

You can't. It's not like their previous phones had wireless charging, and they've taken it away while increasing price. It was never there to begin with.

 

Haha, how are they a niche phone company? I don't think you know what that word means. They're not like Blackberry, putting out a PKB phone. Their phones are the same form factor as pretty much everything else. They're a smaller company, sort of. They're part of a larger company group, so chances of them actually failing are slim. Also, they have over 2,700 employees, and last year had a revenue of $1.9 billion. Hardly "niche" numbers. Their last phone also saw a 152% sales increase in the US. Without wireless charging. Pretty safe to say that it's not that big of a deal to a lot of people. There are phones that are cheaper that have IR blasters too. They're not adding those. OnePlus will eventually add wireless charging, once it becomes necessary...likely with the T model, or when they crest the $1,000 price point. Only a complete idiot would think that OnePlus planned to keep the margin scraping pricing forever.

Ive owned the first 3 oneplus phones. I remember having to buy an invite just to be able to buy one. Pretty dumb for you to think that because im mot happy with some of their decisions that ive never owned one.

 

And your right at the time they didnt have wireless charging.....no flagship did that i am aware of. Your basically saying that oneplus should not update their features to compete with the other flagship phones in the same price range.

 

I loved my oneplus phones. I wouldnt buy one now though. Back when they were $300 and competing with the other flagships it was a a hell of a deal. 

 

And are you under the impression that oneplus isnt looking to gain new customers? What company doesnt want new customers? What kind of logic is that?

 

They are upping their prices and losing customers. The budget customers are not going to stay with oneplus if they are spending the same as the other big companies. So they need to attract new customers.

 

Maybe niche isnt the right word. But they are not as big or well known as you make them out to be. Go into any electronics store, cell phone website, or even walk downtown in most areas and see how many people have a oneplus let alone know the company at all.

 

Your whole argument is basically that they can up the price but not worry about gaining new casual customers.

 

If an average buyer walks into a store how are they going to be sold on a oneoplus at $800? You think the average customer cares about customizing and flashing a phones os? No. So pitch a $800 oneplus phone that doesnt have the features as other more well known flagships at the same price point.

Oneplus is raising prices like the more well known phone companies are except they aren't a popular brand compared to Samsung or Google Pixel.

And even though 50w charging is really nice, IMO an $800 flagship phone should have wireless charging because plenty of midrange phones have wireless charging capability.

@RonnieOP OnePlus will actually gain more hype by raising their prices. You have to show the people that you’re on the same level as Samsung and Apple. So if Apple raises their prices, then everyone else should do the same. Xiaomi will be next with the Pocophone brand. If my prediction is right, there will be a $1000 Pocophone someday. 
 

I personally have a bigger problem with midrange phones selling over $300~$400, all the while sporting mid entry-level SoCs. I’m mostly talking about the Pixel 3A and Samsung A51. If the OnePlus 8 Lite sells for $500 and ships with “meh” specs, I’ll be sad.

Its bad enough that most retail stores dont even carry oneplus, you cant even find oneplus on most the top carriers websites. So if someones shopping for a new plan and phone they wont even see oneplus.

OnePlus is actually very well distributed in Europe. The North American market is a different beast where brand loyalty trumps everything.

Yea oneplus does well for itself dont get me wrong.

 

No idea what you mean by NA and brand loyalty though considering Apple and Samsung dominate the EU the same as they do NA. Brand loyalty is in no way a regional specific thing.

 

Huawei is a bigger force outside of the NA obv due to legal reasons and take a good bit of market share in alot of countries.

Coming from an iPhone, I’m still pretty impressed with Huawei. My work gave me a P20 Lite. And despite the very modest specs it’s rather snappy. Sadly, it comes with a lot of bloatware and the bundled apps for weather, notes etc... are annoyingly complicated. But that doesn’t ruin the experience overall. 
 

Looking at Nokia phones, they’re quite pricey considering the outdated specs and average at best cameras.

Well if the OnePlus 8 lite can hit exactly RM2000 in Malaysia then I wouldn't mind getting it or I could hope this will drive the price of the 7T down
