100% CPU usage when gaming (i5 8400)

Hi everyone, I have question regarding my CPU usage when gaming. My PC is 7 months old now and recently I have discovered that all of the games I play uses 100% of my CPU. I have tried lowering graphics etc. but my CPU is allways on 100% no matter what I do. Im using MSI 1070ti 8gb, 16gb of ram, i5 8400 and b360m gigabyte motherboard. 

Games I have seen my CPU jumping on 100% are Rainbow 6 siege, Fortnite, Battlefield 1 and V and most recently GTA V online and singleplayer. Temperetaured when gaming are normal and by MSI afterburner they are around 60-65C.

Seems like a plain CPU bottleneck, try turning graphical settings up

I'm surprised fortnite would max the cpu , does fortnight on it's lowest setting really max this cpu?

Yes I did in all of my games I am having fps is  capped at 144 as the refresh rate of my monitor is 144hz.

And just to mention all of my games are running smooth and the temperatures are normal. I have made a clean OS installation but CPU is still allways on 100%

Task Manager is showing GTAV is using ~75% so I'm wondering where the other 25% is going to.

If the app has multiple processes associated with it, they get grouped together.

you actually do with a cpu bottleneck. the gpu is overwhelming the cpu with frames. turning the graphics setting up with a cpu bottleneck will get you higher frame rate. i’m speaking from personal experience with cpu bottlenecks.

Thanks, I once had three instances of wow open at once without realizing it and it caused slowdown lol

How would doing less work result in more frames? If you are targeting 144 fps and your CPU won't get you there, no amount of fiddling with your graphical settings will get you 144 fps. You can optimize settings to balance utilization between CPU and GPU resources, but increasing GPU settings to the point where CPU utilization decreases results in reduced frame rates.

You’re arguing something differently entirely. OP was trying to reduce his graphics setting because his cpu was running at 100% while playing games. This will reduce strain on the gpu but not the cpu by nearly as much. The code to the game is important to cpu utilization, but he is having bottlenecking in every game he plays.

 

i never said turning up gpu settings will magically get him to 144 FPS in every game. However, turning up the settings to be a more balanced load has given me higher frame rates. I use to stutter like crazy playing pub-g, the Witcher, and dragon age inquisition on my old i5 6500. I kept turning the setting down to try and fix the issue but it didn’t work. It wasn’t until I increased the settings that I got a higher (by like 5 or 6 FPS) more stable frame rate.

Something isn’t right here. I play the same games and don’t come close to being pegged at 100% usage. 

What else do you have running?

I5 8400 is too weak for GPUs beyond GTX 1070 for 1080p. It will even age worse. 

 

Either up your resolution, so that GPU render rate falls behind CPU render rate, so that your CPU will have headroom.

 

Or, accept your fate and move on.

 

Also you can never, ever, ever, gain FPS from increasing graphical settings. That guy doesn't even know what he is saying. He has some kind of placebo probably.

 

I have GTX 1080 + i5 8400 and in AC Odyssey, at 1080p Ultra, I get a whopping %60 GPU usage. Turning it to 1440p makes GPU usage at %90 but no FPS change.

 

You don't get more FPS by having more GPU usage. GPU usage is just more like a metric that if it can keep its renderrate with CPU or not. And, if you push GPU beyond %99 usage, then you will have lower FPS.

 

If I up the resolution to 4K, it pushes beyond %99 so I get lowered down to 30-35 FPS. Which obviously, in return, CPU render rate becomes more free, and bound to GPU.

Funny, I just got the same problem on my friends PC. He has a i5-8400 and a 1050Ti and every game he played like R6 Siege, Apex, created 100% Usage at CPU or GPU. I cant explain how every game hits so easily the 100%. It is a 6C/6T CPU; dont understand how it gets to the limit so fast.
