2080 TI SLI x 9900K Power Usage [No OC]

Straightforward question. 

 

Power usage for following system?

 

2080 TI (stock/no overclock)

2080 TI (stock/no overclock)

9900K (stock/no overclock)

32GB DDR4 3200Hz RGB Ram 

960GB Corsair m2 NVME

Z390 Asrock Taichi

6x RGB case fans

360MM Astek AIO in push/pull w/6 RGB fans

Lian li pc011 (room for 2x PSU if necessary)

 

Use case: 4K gaming only. Nothing else.

Purpose: Prevent dipping below 60Hz/FPS

 

I ordered a system with single 2080TI and Corsair RM850 PSU. Then found a too-good to passup deal on another 2080TI. 

 

Is this PSU gonna be able to push everything at stock settings?

 

Legit Reviews website did an SLI test on 2080 TIs and their whole system purportedly only pulled 640W in SLI, albeit with an 8086K rather than 9900K and various other different components. I find that value extremely low, but if even remotely accurate this 850W PSU should suffice, no?

 

Numerous other threads around the Internet have values all over the place for 2080TI SLI even here. Everything from 800W-1600W. 

 

I don't plan on overclocking as it doesnt seem to provide any benefit for 4K gaming. It was only in retrospect I realized 3200Hz ram was also not necessary for 4K gaming, but hindsight is 20/20 I guess and anyway it will help with regular browsing and whatever ancillary programs I find myself running. The point of the build was to both run games at 4K without ever dropping helow 60FPS, and to futureproof as much as possible. My last computer related purchase was an I5 2500K bought in 2011 and I hope to get similar lifetime out of this one. 

 

So all that irrelevant information being said, is the 850W gonna be enough,to push this computer in stock configuration?

2080ti has factory power limit from 260w to 300w depending on the card, then the 9900k at stock can pull about 200w (depends on how much voltage the board automatically sets to). Not like the CPU will actually do that easily in a game because you're still GPU bottlenecked at 4K. I'd say you're just within capabilities of the PSU, but better undervolt the 9900k and preferably lock it at a lower frequency to reduce power draw. The GPUs can be undervolted as well.

I wouldn't go with anything below 900W for that build. 1000W+ would be best.

(Build will draw around 700-800W. It's good to leave 20-30% headroom on the power supply so you're not straining it too much, which would cause it to heat up and run louder (because the fan would have to work harder).

 

Also, if you add all the parts on http://PCPartPicker.com, it'll tell you an estimate of how much power it'll draw, and checks compatibility too.

I've found that this website gives you a general round-about idea of what you'll need (https://outervision.com/power-supply-calculator) but as @TheKDub said you'll always want to go a little higher just to give it some headroom. Plus you could always decide to overclock so getting a PSU with a higher wattage will let you do that as well.

I think I've written this elsewhere on LTT, but if not ... my system is a bit different than what you're thinking about:

1 OC'd 7900X

2 x OC'd FE 2080Ti cards

OC'd DDR4 (4GHz)

Some storage, etc.

 

With that all said, I have a 900W UPS.  Annnnnnd ... nope.  Under load, the 900W UPS says, "Nope.  Nuh uh.  No sir.  Not happening.  I can't cover this for you...." *click* and it shuts off.  Which, as you can imagine, is a bit annoying.

 

So, I doubt your 850 will be enough even without OC'ing your hardware.

Thank you guys. Looks like it's either add a 2nd PSU or upgrade original psu. I was really hoping to slap in the 2nd card, tack on nvlink and go but I guess a little more work is in order.

I'm a noob with computers too though, so maybe adding a second psu is safer than replacing the original. I know it's not rocket science but everything seems to break when I touch it.

Power supply replacement is pretty easy actually, especially if you dont care about aesthetics of the build.  I would say that you would get less headache from doing the power supply replacement instead of an additional PSU down the road.

Sorta. Don't know exactly how ugly we're talking. I don't even how good of a job cyberpower is gonna do with the cable management. ETA is still two weeks out. Shouldn't be too hard to replicate the cable management in the lianli cable by cable I suppose? This is pretty pathetic on my part having worked in the power supply industry for ten years but that's what happens when you're relegated to a desk all day every day and practically forbidden from stepping foot into the warehouse lol.... lol yep!  do you have a budget you want to stick to for the either additional or upgraded PSU?

Zotac (2.5 slot) to go in PCI slot 4

EVGA XC (2 slot) to go in PCI slot 2

 

Just hoping they don't mount the radiator on the bottom. That will be not good. Might see a cheap 2080ti for sale in that case.

Thats good option, Honestly though, if you are not considering pinching pennies, I would opt for something more like a 1200W PSU, especially if you think that you might ever Overclock any of it. Plus the EVGA XC will draw more power than the Zotac,

No problem!  you can also plug all your stuff into this site, to see the absolute bare minimum that your setup will draw, this number seems to be short typically though. especially since any heavy load tasks with increase power draw.
 

 

You can edit the parts as you see fit to make sure everything is correct.

I can tell you exactly, I have this system. Actually a fair bit better due to custom loops and screens and stuff but anyway,

 

According to Corsair Link, I use about 200W at idle.

 

CPU only load at 5.0Ghz (CPU-Z benchmark) - Around 305W peak.

 

GPU load (gaming good enough?) With SLI enabled based on The Division with 3440x1440 100Hz display at ultra: It moves around 450-700W it fluctuates. Peak I seen: Power in: 780W and power out: 800W (not overclocked), OC will increase the number by 60W on the GPUs.

According to Corsair Link, I use about 200W at idle.

 

CPU only load at 5.0Ghz (CPU-Z benchmark) - Around 305W peak.

Just started up The Division, took a screenshot at a peak wattage. This was in the base so not many things moving around, and I was running forward to make the wattage go up, but this will pretty much be peak.
