No kidding they are smart! My ex's little poodle could spell. To avoid getting the little guy unnecessarily excited if we used the word "walk", we would spell the word out. He caught on quickly. We would try a synonym, such as "stroll", then, when he caught on, spell it out. He still would catch on. Same for "feed", "ride", etc.

 

How you say the word "no" and your expression has everything to do with how effective it will be. It has to be stern and convey that you mean it. It doesn't have to be very loud, just firm. You can't let the puppy melt you, no matter how cute it is. Think of the "Mom" voice and expression that can wilt anything in sight.

 

Heck, it doesn't even have to be the word "no". Just a certain sound uttered with stern authority will work. I have used a quick sound like "ahnk" on familiar and strange animals quite effectively.

Pit bull, got him from someone who wasn't doing a good job with him, you could see his ribs and spine.
His previous owner wasn't around and had another dog that he said was greedy with food, there were other ways to keep him from getting that skinny, but he's a healthy pup now at least.

They really are! That little poodle is a sweetheart.

 

Thank you for the thinking of Mom voice tip. We'll have to use that next time. We were able to have some progress on biting people's slippers (and their feet unintentionally) by reacting loudly. One step at a time, I guess.

Making great progress on the training front. Doing the 'double-down' near a busy park with children running and yelling and cars driving by. Working on staying calm and relaxed amongst the distractions. ;)

Dinky at approx 13wks

She's now letting us know she wants to go to the toilet, instead of occasionally having accidents with no warning. She's almost always dry in the mornings though after 7-8 hours in her crate, usually nothing at all. She's now being much more cuddly too, and less biting... which is a relief. She's now responding to her name and taking note of us more too. Sounds like she was a monster, but TBH I think she's done really well, especially since she was in kennels with her siblings and mum for her first 8 weeks of life, and IMO must have been a real culture shock for her... I am really proud of her!

She's still learning some tricks/training, but is responding well I think... she's good at sit, down, leave/no/off and crawl... and still learning roll over, stay, high-five and a few others.

She has grown so much... she was 2.5Kg when we got her, and is now 8.2Kg.

Yep, we're amazed too.. she's shot up this last few weeks. she is now big enough to start getting things off side tables and such... joy /s  ?

We think she'll actually grow to be taller than my sister's dog Charlie. Can't find a picture of him ATM.

 

 

We love her, even though she can be a pest. Best way is distraction to overcome most of her bad habits we've found. I just bought some "chukit ultra sqeaker" balls, she loves them and will come running no matter what she's doing unless food is involved, LOL.

Such a sad story in the news here in the UK, some woman threw her 12 year old golden retriever off a pier into a lake then stood and watched him drown. 2 bystanders jumped in and pulled him out but they couldn't save him.

 

Luckily someone filmed the entire thing then immediately rang the police and handed them the video, the owner was arrested today and has been charged with animal cruelty offences.

 

Fucking why? That poor dog would have had no idea what he did wrong and probably still loved her until his dying breath. In my opinion there's no available punishment that's severe enough for her.

Thinking of starting up a small dog training business on the side, specializing in stopping unwanted behavior... ?
