Here's another vouch for LaTeX. I had to learn LaTeX to write my BSc thesis in math. I ended up dropping both Word and PowerPoint and haven't looked back. For anyone who's planning to write math, you'll really, really want LaTeX. Not only is Word clunky and time-consuming, but there's also tons of things Word simply cannot do.
 
Personally, I took notes during classes with pen and paper, but started using LaTeX for assignments as soon as I had learned the basics. Since I use LaTeX a lot, I ended up making a custom template that I use as a basis, so that I can pretty much write my text on any platform I wish, copy-paste it into the LaTeX editor of my choice, build and get a finished document.
 
LaTeX is a godsend because not only can it handle pretty much any scientific notation you throw at it, but it does most of the formatting for you. Of course, there will be times when you'll want to customize things like chapter numbering, but that's pretty easy to do. And while it isn't necessarily WYSIWYG, adding things like titles and page breaks is very simple and rather intuitive. Not to mention that most of the editors will have extensive menus for basic functions like that.

hey so harvey norman australia is selling the surface pro 3 128gb i5 model for just under $1000 and its usually $1200, im not sure if there will be another sale like this again. i have been eyeing it for quite some time now and i need your oppinions should i buy it. im going to be using for school i have researched pretty much everything about it i really like it and i really like the concept.

Fair enough. I would press selling the 2012 and getting a 2013, because the 2013 is orders of magnitude better than either of them imao, but I completely understand wanting to try different platforms. However, with the iPad Mini, the specs just aren't there. They only gave even the iPhone 6 1GB of RAM, which is fine for now, but in the future it's going to sting. Apple just refuses to design things to last...
That's not to say I don't appreciate the iOS platform. I love my iPod Touch, and in my mind the music player interface is superior to anything that Android has.
I would say that if you're set on the Apple, wait a little bit, save up, wait until the after-christmas sales and buy a later-gen ipad like the iPad Mini 2.

unless your computer has a mic/headphone combo jack you will need to buy a splitter for it. the audio quality would be just fine for gaming it might be lacking in a bit of bass but thats about it as for the mic quality i have no idea probably best to look up some mic reviews.

Even if it negates privacy and anonymity through login credentials, it's a big push towards a larger adoption of tor. The current internet is broken in terms of privacy and security, use of tor as an everyday tool is a big step in the right direction.

I'm pretty sure all tablets will bend if you try hard enough. It's a wide and thin device, the laws of physics are against it.

So the government now has access to absolutely everything they want to, as well as being able to control it, even if it's not the device that they're targeting.
 
Next up; what happens if you're a whistleblower, journalist or even a normal person who leaks information.
The government want's to keep it's secrets, and it'll jail the shit out of anyone who thinks about doing otherwise.
 
Now, something to ice the cake on just how extreme this is:
Yup, it would have allowed them to torture people, keeping in mind that could be any average person who leaks information.

Senator Brandis being the asshat behind all of this.
 
Oh, and you know that thing about the government forcing ISP's to store data?
So they ended up sneaking it in to a different piece of legislation, like they always fucking do.

I personally think that the current direction is going to make Aus go to complete shit, but all in the name of protecting the people. I used to get angry, then for a while I stopped caring, but now I'm just incredibly frustrated. You know that feeling you get when you just want to punch the living daylights out of someone, but you really can't? Yeah, just like that.
 
I think that the terrorist actions have been completely wrong, and that the reasons behind those actions are also wrong, but I can see how these sort of actions by the govt are going to edge people closer to taking doing crazy things against the country, and it's government.
