This is interesting, I'd have quite liked to have seen Samsung make it, but I suppose experience wins over enthusiasm. Plus samsungs foundries have mainly been making more simple mobile chips, nothing on this massive scale from what I can tell, so there's no idea if they could cope with the detail of it.

Compare that to the current 512BG/s achieved by HBM(1) in the Fury X. That's fast.

On my i5, that NEVER happens, it never uses that much, never spikes that high, and never affects GPU performance.
Something is amiss in THAT system.
 
 
/OP - Even if you picked up a 16x Opteron, the per-core performance does not make it that great, and no doubt slower than modern CPU's, however for a rendering rig, I'd like to see one compared to a modern Quad+HT or true 8 core.

I just ordered Beyerdynamic DT 235, they are excellent and very nice to wear. I can only reccomend them 

The structure of your sentence made it unclear exactly which was the bottleneck. Either way, that point is resolved now. Also, do not say "unlike you" because i look at every benchmark, not just single GPU's. Oh, and i never said the extra threads don't get used. I said beyond 4 cores, extra threads become useless. Let's broaden the spectrum a little, shall we?
 

 
Notice how close the i5 4690k, i7 4790k, and i7 5960x are in average frame rate? Sure, every now and then, the 5960x spikes to a 5% frame improvement over the other CPU's, but 5% is not substantial at all, given its massive difference in price. 
 

 
Notice in this video, during all of the games, performance was relatively the same. The only time the 5930k pulled ahead, was in a synthetic benchmark.

ACU seems to be the only exception to the rule, if what you linked is truly accurate. I don't have the game, so i can't test it myself, but people have often complained about Ubisoft ports in the past. Battlefield 4 is normally extremely accommodating when it comes to using more cores, and even it showed little difference between the higher core/thread counts in most testing.
 
Point is, the difference it makes is 9 times out of 10, pointless. Plenty of people running ACU on i5's with overclocked 980's and still hitting that 60fps window just fine without any issues. For gaming, 4 cores/4 threads is plenty enough.

Why does it matter? If the thread itself has enough information i could care less. I get angry when people are like : "What cpu do i get" then they tell you nothing. No budget, no "i game" or "i do video work", just what cpu should i get. Like, thanks bud. That is gonna help me help you.

BUT! I have a dual core right now and I need 4 cores for my workload.

I don't think this is correct. Tahiti XT (7970/280x) has been discontinued for quite some time now. I believe this will the Tonga XT (full Tonga), which would make sense seeing the rather lightweight cooler on it.
 
Performance will probably be 10-20% faster than the current 380 (Tonga Pro) putting it somewhere between the GTX 960, R9 380 and GTX 970, R9 290/390.

I'm excited for it but the driving seems odd. I don't think anybody will be play this with a wheel. It's also too hyped people think it's Underground 3.
